We have 2 V twins, one is a Kohler, one is a Kawasaki and the valves adjust the same way, but with different settings However, the Kohler has no valve cover gaskets so I cut a set from gasket material and used my trusty Kubota 3 bond sealant on the gaskets I cut. You should adjust the valves every 200 hours at least. I tend to run my intakes a bit tight. It's the intake valve that actuates the compression release. If it's a Kohler, check the starter motor too. They have a bad habit of getting loose and binding up.

None of them last forever and not changing the oil in a timely fashion really shortens their lifespan. I change mine at least once a year and a new filter too. If you can get 1500 hours on one, consider yourself lucky.

I use Rotella 15-40 in mine and keep the air filter clean too. Every year I pull the shroud off and blow the grass out from under it. Keeps them running cool and lasting longer.

Just as an update. The camshaft blew apart inside and was what flew out the back of the engine.

Got a new engine installed and so far so good.

Think I'd have went to HF and purchased a (Lifan) Predator and called it good.

Unfortunately when I was looking for a replacement engine, HF sold out of the vertical shaft engine for riding mowers in 2020 or 2021, can't remember, and it hasn't been back in stock that I could find.

I didn't know that. One would think it would cause a cough back through carb possibly starting a fire. But then I've always been a B&S fan and a Dapper Dan Man.

Actually, today the bolt patterns are all ISO so they all interchange. Just like tractor seats. the bases are all ISO and they all interchange. I've had excellent service and no issues with any pf the Pred's I've purchased. Most all of them are made by Lifan.
