On is good! Are they adjustable?

Honest question not dumb question. :)

The shoes should have several washers for height adjustment. I'd leave them on as long as they are adjusted right.

If the ground is frozen. No shoes on plow truck or tractor.
If the ground is soft, I really try not to plow. 6", I think about it.

my driveway pavement is in good shape, flat with no cracks or areas for the plow to catch.
I keep my shoes adjusted up so the plow is clearing all of the snow. the only issue is, it is hard on my sealer or coating.

For hard surfaces, I leave the shoes adjusted even with the cutting edge to provide the closest "shave" while providing many additional square inches of wear surface. Then leave it alone and it all wears down together.

I never use the shoes. They are more expensive than cutting edges. In spring storms the shoes dig into gravel surfaces and make ruts.

Generally shoes or skids are used only for first snows until a base is created and that mostly on gravel drives.
Even so shoes always dig a bit on gravel and many guys simply back drag the plow to compact first snow falls.

The worst possible event is a heavy dumping (10-12") on a non frozen base especially if that snow is wet.
Nothing works well in those conditions!

We just about always get snow on a non frozen or barely frozen base.
