1986 MF 1040, 1942 Farmall A, 1949 Farmall Super A
Mornin Guys,
Ive been chompin at the bit to put the Super A to its first real test with a good load on her and I got the chance this weekend. One of my neighbors had some trees come down and offered me the wood so I hooked up my trailer along with my chiansaw and splitting maul and headed over there.

I really wanted to test that govenor out to make sure it was workin right. I loaded that trailer up with nice wet red oak and birch until the tires were startin to get flat :) Also it was a bit wet back on there property but I needed a good test.

Well, I can happily say that the old girl didnt miss a beat haulin that load up a good sized hill, wont be sellin any time soon :)

For the more astute observers, you will notice that I halved and quartered some of my rounds before puttin it on the trailer, the old 55 yr old back aint what it used to be :)

Awesome!

I will caution you though. That tractor does not weigh enough to stop a heavy trailer; be careful on down slopes...

I tie a light rope/line to the breakaway cable on my trailer. I hook it up beside me, so if the trailer starts to push me I can grab that and stop in a hurry... I had a heavy trailer push me going downhill, the Farmall-A just skidded; it didn't weigh enough. I controlled it, but barely.

Even with wheel weights, it is still a lite tractor.

Hey Robert,
Your right on the weight. I was on a paved road going down the hill and I took it slow, but that is very good advice. I had an uncomfortable experience years ago on my 42 A and I was on a dirt drive and my brakes wernt that good so I know exactly what your talkin about. Its got way more pullin power than stoppin power ! :)

Oh Scotty,
That is soooo cool! She looks great.
Makes all those hours working on it worthwhile, doesn't it?
I can't believe you are actually working it though...too beautiful!
Great photo.

My uncle has 10+ old Farmall tractors ranging from an A model up to the M series (a list from memory includes: A, Super A, B(used for mowing, not restored), Super C, Farmall 130, H. M, MTA, MD, Super M, F-20, W-6 (?)). And I think that is a good list as of 3 months ago.

A few years ago he and a bunch of other guys who had Farmall or John Deere antiques met up in a 100 acre field and plowed with their machines. Talk about cool!

I looked at an H tonight that I think I'm going to buy. I might be contacting you for restoration tips, your tractor is beautiful! I'd be afraid to get it dirty!

Mornin Guys,
Thanks guys, it is definitely a fun tractor, cant explain it, its just fun.

Alan, go buy it if you can, you wont be sorry. Make sure the block is in good shape.

Rob, you should know better than anyone about the satisfaction of the work you put in your projects, youve done more than your share :)

Birdhunter, I dream about 10 Farmalls and a barn to keep them in :)

Roxynoddle, yep I would love to own an H. My buddy has a Super H that I have been tryin to get from him and he wont let it go :( To be fair about it he is rebuilding the tractor himself :)

Hi ya Scotty, Boy that is a great picture! I notice your trailer looks almost as good as your tractor, same style paint job on the wheels , Very clean....

When I did my car trailer , I put and older style factory wheel on the trailer that matched my truck... So I know how **** a perfectionist can be:D

But who cares , It makes us happy with out bothering anybody except those who might be jealous:rolleyes:

Mornin Mark,
The trailer was pretty descent at one time but its sits outside and needs to be cleaned up again, some rust on it etc... But the tractors look good on it behind the truck :)

Alan, boy I could take you up on the logsplitter really easy :) Hey, does that Super A have the mid mount sicklemower ??? I think thats the A-22 mower, wouldnt mind havin that either. Fryeburg,Me is only 170 miles from East Wells,Vt :) I tried sendin you an e-mail but I got thrown to the wolves :) Later !

Evening scott,
The tractor had a rear sickle bar,it caught my eye because ive been looking for one for my kubota.Im not 100% sure the tractor was an A .I remember thinkingwhat a cute little bugger it was. When i saw yours ,i thought it was the same tractor. For some reason i recall it being gray primer color.I think it was being restored. If i get time ill check it out.

Hi Alan,
The rear sickle mower is the IH 16A, I have one for my 42 A. But the 22A midmount for the Super A would be the cats ***** ;) :) Heck you wouldnt even have to turn around and look back, just down and right :)

I have a rear mount I want to rebuild for my 41 A. But, what advantage does a sickle mower have over a rotary mower? Is the sickle good for average field mowing, or just cutting hay? I have only used the rotary mower before, on my Kubota.

Afternoon Robert,
The sickle mower gives you a much nicer cut IMO, and you can get under trees with overhanging branches easier than a tractor that has a bushog behind it. The problem with the sickle mower is if you dont bale the hay or pickup what youve cut, the second cut will plug the bar up with hay thats laying on the ground allready. Thats what I ran into when I was using the 42 A to mow off my fields. Now I use the Massey with a bushog. But the sicklemower gives you a nice clean cut and low to the ground also.
