What size will a 1601D pull on flat ground. All way heard bigger was
better, but I don't want to over load the tactor. Should I get a four
foot or go with the five foot. Seen several good deals around my area
on used mowers. So what do you have on the back of your 1601D and/or
same size tractor?? Thanks guys. Frank

A ym1601 has I believe to be 19-20 hp engine, it would easily run a 5 footer, and most likely a 6 footer. My opinion based on experience.

I tried my 6' finishing mower behind my YM1700 and in my opinion, it worked the tractor a little to hard. I found a used 5' Woods finishing mower and use that behind the 1700 and it does good. If the grass is tall it will still lug the tractor so I have to cut a little more often which gives me more seat time. So with this said I believe you will be happier with the 5' mower.
I use the 6' finishing mower behind my JD.

Usually the problem here is the tractor will run a larger mower than it can safely lift. A 6' deck on a tractor this size will pull the front end up quite easily if it will even lift it, a 5' is gonna require front end weight to keep the nose down. Might even need some front weight for the 4' to be safe. I have a larger machine and I beleive I could easily run a 7' or 8', but at full lift with a 5' deck a quick hit of the brakes in reverse will bring the front up a bit.

You are correct and I should have stated that I had to add about 80 pounds of ballast to the front of the 1700 to safely handle the 5' mower. Even with the weight on the front I did a couple of spectacular wheelies with the 6' mower so I no longer use that mower with the 1700. My heart and the seat could not stand that excitement.

I run a woods RM 59 on my YM135 and it doesn't seem to have any problems. It does bog sown a little in the high grass but not to the point of needing to downshift.

I agree on the front getting light so I put 200-250 pounds of weights on the front and it is much better now. It has plenty of lift strength just not enough front weight. It is still a little light but I have a very flat yard and I will be careful.

YMMV

I have a 1610d which is the same hp as yours,I run a 4' First Choice mower,no problem. The 4' is small enough to get around trees etc.I mow approx.11/2 acre.I used to take the fel off but lately have left it on.I used the same mower when I had a 1510 w/o a fel.First Choice is made in Italy and it's a very solid made mower.

I ran a five foot belly mower on my 186D (15 @ the PTO). I will say the RPMs dropped a little in tall thick grass....... you sould be good to go on a five footer.
