Did you fold the chain up under the deck to see if the blades would hit the chains if bouncing around?

Yes, I did. Only several of the chains in the exact middle would hit and then only if they were pushed upwards into the blade. I usually pick the cutter up a few inches when backing up anyways.

Really like your chain addition. Took delivery of my 1430 a few weeks ago and have had it out only once - had to move a bit of dirt in order to be able to forge my small creek. The fields to be mowed are still a bit too wet for mowing so will still need to wait a few more weeks to try the brush cutter. I may try your chain addition if I have too much debris coming up from the mower.

I almost used a rubber flap but thought that it might get ripped if I backed over it. At least the chains have a chance if the get hit.

Today I worked the **** out of the PT and the Brush Cutter. After brushcutting for about an hour, the chains in the middle moving outward were knocked off(I sure could tell when they were hitting /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif) I think I'm going to go with a rubber flap all around or rubber in the center and chain on the sides. I also need to find some bullet-proof tires for the brushcutter. One of my solid rubber tires got ripped off the rim.

The chains were too close to the blade when you backed up? We wondered about that. It sure looked nice, though. The brush hog stops for nothing. I think a rubber flap will get eaten, too. You would have to make some sort of extension to keep the flap or chains back far enough so that they cannot touch the blades if folded under while backing up.
I was out brush hogging with the PT425 Monday night and it sure is a beast. Stuff flies everywhere. A leaf blower does a good job of cleaning things up off the front of the tractor afterwards. I am going to invest in a full face guard and hard hat, though. I was getting slapped by multiflora rose branches after they flip past the ROPS... OUCH!!!

I've had a rubber skirt on the rear of brush hog for two years. Works great. Try to find some stiff enough so it doesn't fold back under the deck when you back up. I used the hog once or twice without the guard on the back and it sure looked scary to me.

After going through the same thing I put a pair of Albion Texite solid phenolic industrial caster wheels on the rear of my PT 1845 roughcut mower. End of problem.
Here's a link to my web page showing how I modified them to fit. They come set up for a one inch shaft and I had to bush them down. They being narrower than the old wheels, I had to make up some spacers too. It was a bit of effort but well worth it in the long run. I've since replaced the front caster wheels too, using ZTR solid rubber wheels. Maybe you can find something similar that will fit right out of the box.
