Finally one for the good guys - Camera install pays off

I am expecting to hear from the Sheriff's department tomorrow. I'll post updates when we get them. We posted the video on Facebook to get some eyes out around town. We live in a town of about 70,000. In less than 12 hours we had a truck location down to the street and block number and the following day had a name to go with the truck. Looking him up on facebook showed he was in prison from 2008-2013. Not sure what for but not someone I care to have around.

I don't do Fbook, so am often startled by what people post there.

He put his Prison Record on Facebook ? !!!

Any chance the Sheriff can add Extreme Stupidity to the charges ?

Glad to see the cameras worked well for you , and thanks for posting - many of us are looking for guidance (performance/reliabilty vs. $$$) on vid systems.

Rgds, D.

We don't post much on FB (unlike others I don't think most people care what I'm eating, where I'm currently at, or what my current mood is) however I do use it to keep track of social groups we are involved in, family activity, new pictures, church and school activities, etc.

And yes - he had a long post on his timeline showing all of his tattoos for each of his fights in prison. He looks to be a real upstanding citizen of our town.

+1 for our side, just sad that you have to go to the trouble and expense, just to keep what you have worked for. SMH

I've been looking at camera systems for 3 years since I moved from Texas to Illinois. We are a bit isolated, being 1/2 mile off the road. Haven't had any issues....but feel problems are not that far away. This is the year I've got the time and money to do it. Former owner had a security system tied to the phone line, I didn't even have a line installed. Door and window sensors are still it place, thinking I want to activate that too. Anyone point me in the right direction for that?

On the cameras. I want an IP setup. I've been looking at systems....versus putting something together, but really unsure that's the way to go. Former IT guy retired 7 years ago, but I've forgotten more than I knew....however putting together an IP camera system doesn't frigthen me, BUT there can be some aggravation in doing this. My question ...piece it together or buy a system. How much do I save?

Earlier person mentioned Neely Security...I note Amazon beats their pricing...but this grey market thing makes me wonder. I've also noted Supercircuits Alibi systems. Anyone experience with their systems?

If you go with proprietary, you may not be able to add another camera later if they quit making them or company goes out of business.

Blue Iris is easy and tons of discussions on forums etc., so I don't think you wold have any problems. One benefit of using something like Blue Iris to roll your own is you can have a mix of cameras. So if you need to add a camera later you can get the one that has the best deal, soecs, or features for the job ... not tied to vendor lockin.

And if you really want to go crazy some have features where you can control other things like outdoor light or play a sound when motion is detected.

I think you would be able to do your own if you already understand IP networking etc.

Where I usually get into having fun is using a wired IP camera on a wireless link to get coverage at remote locations. Wireless cameras aren't that great and they are expensive so I usually make my own wireless link and put whatever camera I want on it. Had to resort to things like this in order to cover a choke point where I could get good pictures of license plates.

Have any opinions of buying through Amazon? Thinking of buying some get started items from them and as you mentioned roll you own system.

Just google around if you're thinking of the hikvision model I mentioned. If you see too crazy a price it may be one of the 'unofficial' ones but on Amazon I would think if that were the case you'd see people mentioning it in the comments/reviews. Even if you get one of the grey ones I don't think it's a big deal. I think someone made some tools to be able to upgrade it to the official firmware. About the only problem you could run into is if it may need warranty work, hikvision may refuse to honor the warranty.

If my goal was to save $$$ I would probably chance all that but the ones I've bought were for the church/school so I didn't want to take that chance since it wasn't 'my' $$$.

Well gentlemen I wish I had some updates for you but at the moment the only thing from my end is frustration. Two messages to the Sheriffs office to see what the status is and no return phone calls. Through work on my end I have the persons name, street address, and current location of the truck. I have video of the truck and person along with three other individuals who have called or messaged me confirming they know the person in the video. I have also been able to find out that the person has a felony warrant out for non-support.

As of right now the law has still not picked him up and he was just at a local pawn shop as of yesterday, probably selling more stuff from other people.

I've been told by someone I know in the prosecutors office that they are not very active with misdemeanor cases. Unless I become a thorn in the laws side by badgering them about our case I feel like the case file is going to be stuffed in a cabinet just like it was on our last reports of theft. I feel like I'm doing their job for them and still getting nowhere.
