I have read all of these posts and think I may just thread the needle and upgrade to a 24" bar via a Husqvarna 562xp, even though a 372 is just a couple dollars more. A 372 has more power but also more weight. And I have read a lot of comments at various locations about the 372 being tempermental with its starting characteristics.
Finally got to cut a large solid tree with the460 24" bar.

Nobody has mentioned what kind of tree it was. I don't recognize it.

That'll be fine if your use for it is intermittent. As stated previously, if you're in 24" plus wood on a regular basis, you're going to be under-gunned. A longer bar does not a bigger saw make. Big wood needs big saws unless it is an uncommon encounter. And certainly the 372 is not the only saw out there to meet the need. Simply put forth as one of the potential solutions. I don't have, never have had a 372. I do have a Jonsered 2172 which is similar. I don't particularly like my saw but I'm pretty sure the 372 must be a reliably starting saw as thousands of people make their living with them. Can't really say. I like Stihls but won't bash others. Do you have any friends with big saws they don't get to use much? Have them over for a cutting party and cook out.

The 55 rancher that I have, I've had for yrs. It came from the dealer with the 20'' bar. It would be much happier with an 18''. I've only had my 372 for a few months . I haven't had any starting issues. From what I read / heard, the starting issues (flooding) were from people not knowing how to start the saw .The 372 is heaver than the 55 but ,that weight also works to your advantage. The 372 ( in my opinion) isn't a very good liming saw due to the weight. That's why I have the rancher and a small home lite with a 16'' bar
