Shelter doors are supposed to be designed to open inward so that nothing on the exterior can pin them closed. Even if the opening is obstructed, once you have the hatch opened inward, you can access the debris and hopefully cut your way through it.

Supposed to VS reality... :ROFLMAO:

Anyhow, we were snug as a bug in a rug down there. Hid in it many times in my youth. It was built in the 50's, back when the Russians were coming.

Funny how what people today call 'storm sirens' were called 'air raid sirens' when we were young. Different purpose.

The devistation from that storm is unimagineable. Glad OP is ok. Hopefully the reports of lower casualty nubmers bears out.

Glad to hear you say that everybody is OK. I've never been anywhere near a tornado or hurricane. I get winds here up to 30 mph. Makes a HORRID sound blowing thru the big pines. That's enough for me ............

It's time for the media to put boots and gloves on if they want interviews.⛑️
I like the way you think!
Sometimes by the media being there, they act as the grease to get the skids moving for donations/manpower. Yes, some can interfere, but generally, in times like this, it's better to get the word out.
True but it really ticked me off when i heard one of them was complaining about how far away the hotel accommodations were from there, so they could have power, wifi, etc..

Bear with me on my posts, having to use IPhone, no Internet. We drove to a restaurant about thirty miles away and met my sisters for a birthday meal. My mother passed away October 20th and today was her birthday. This had been planned for months. We came back down Purchase Parkway/I69 and my wife was horrified at some areas we passed thru to get home. More about that in next post.

Nephew did NOT get sit down meal Sunday. His wife tried to get him to go but he had too much going. Cannot get pressure in water system, too many leaks and too many lines breaking when pressure builds. Three separate systems involved and one or the other leaking out and losing pressure. Linemen worked overnight on main lines to bring power into main part of town. Everything has to be new. None of the old lines can be used. My sister is concerned for his health and sanity. A lot of decisions having to be made.

Local police only have two or three undamaged cars. Police cars from all over Kentucky in town. National Guard directing traffic. Emergency vehicles everywhere.

Daughter said her agency covers 80% of businesses in town plus all the destroyed old churches plus city and county governments. All companies had adjusters in town by Saturday noon. We delivered computers salvaged from Mayfield office to Brenton office.

Six years ago we stood in our back yard and watched a tornado a couple miles away. It swerved at the last minute and missed the school where our oldest taught. That tornado crossed I69/Purchase Parkway where it crosses Clark’s River between the towns of Mayfield and Benton. It tore trees up on both sides of the road at that bridge. This one crossed the road at the same place.

Hmmmm!!!

Churches of Christ disaster relief has sent 2 semi truckloads of supplies to mayfield, 1 to Benton, 2 to bowling green, 1 to Princeton. I’m sure more will be coming. Our church will be contributing to sending more supplies.

I heard that the temps are now dipping below freezing at night. It's going to make recovery/restoration efforts that much harder on everyone. All of these folks need shelter now; and not Katrina grade FEMA trailers. The niceties of internet can come later. The major carriers have mobile cell sites that they can truck in and essentially provide everyone 'free' service with an active device.
