The LED looks great- My first thought was how I could do that with a 10 segment bar of LEDs. But the thought of 10 sensors makes that too much time/money.
I think an analog potentiometer and a meter gauge could work well. Mark the gauge for bucket level at ground level, and level at full left, and the rest could be interpretated on the fly.
