Farmall 40
I just bought a used BH90 backhoe to add to my 2011 Case Farmall 40 tractor. The tractor already has an L350 FEL installed. Going through the installation instructions for the backhoe, if I understand them correctly, I'm finding something I don't care for regarding how the backhoe will operate with the tractor and FEL.

It appears the FEL hydraulics run off the "power beyond" port. The BH90 installation instructions tell me to remove the "power beyond" hydraulic line for the FEL (which is between the control joystick and a hydraulic manifold) and replace it with a hose and disconnects. If I understand this correctly, the FEL would be connected to the "power beyond" port when in use, but when I need the backhoe, using the quick-connects, I have to disconnect the FEL and connect the backhoe and vice versa when I need to use the FEL again - meaning I can only run the FEL, or the backhoe, but not both.

Can anyone who has a Case Farmall or DX (or the blue equivalents) with a FEL and backhoe confirm this is correct? If that's right, has anyone put together a better, less time consuming switch-over solution they would be able to share - perhaps a solenoid operated valve and a switch?

Thanks,
Jason

I have no help to offer except to say that seems absurd. I would never use a backhoe without lifting the front wheels off the ground (or at least taking most of the weight off) for stability. Any manufacturer who suggests you can use a backhoe without a FEL has got to be out of their mind (assuming we're talking about a rubber tired, pivoting front axle tractor). I hope you're missing something...

Normally when the tractor is ordered prepped for load the loader control valve will be installed as original equipment. The main pump pressure feed will go to the front end loader valve, this valve will have a return to the hydraulic reservoir and a power beyond port. The power beyond port will then (if the tractor is equipped with remote valves) feed the pressure into the tractor remotes. If the tractor does not have remotes the power beyond will normally go to the 3 point controls.

If a tractor is ordered without the loader prep package and without remotes the only hydraulic user would be the 3 point hitch, in that case there may be a manifold with a power beyond plug which will be removed to feed a loader control valve that would be dealer or owner installed. In this case if the loader control valve does not have a power beyond that is the only reason I could think of to place the backhoe supply before the loader.

If the second case is correct I would install a detent open center remote valve with power beyond, run the existing power beyond to the new valve(s) a return to tank and that power beyond to the loader control.

When you wish to use your backhoe plug into the remote, place the remote in detent and operate away, to use the loader just remove the remote from detent to center and go.
