Did the roto tilling today just before the lightning storm hit. Tomorrow I will cover the garden with black plastic and then cover the edges, as suggested. Hope I will have a LOT less weeds next year.

It also will help next year to put the plastic down and plant as many things as you can on it. My father was great at that, he would lay plastic that you could almost bounce a quarter from.

I picked our first jalapeño pepper today, 9 of them 2.5 to 3" long.
We made poppers and I ate 7 of them with supper.
I may need a few Tums before bedtime.
But they sure were good. Can't wait to do it all over again.

I should be picking peas by the end of the week. My potatoes have blossomed, so I could start digging them anytime but just bought a bag. Last year I had a total crop failure, they just didn't produce for some reason. It's the first time in at least a decade that I've bought potatoes.

I like them about the size of a large egg, cooked until almost done, lightly flattened but not mashed, fried in butter with a sprinkle of salt and fresh dill. Sour cream on the side.
If I was going to the electric chair that would be a major part of my final meal.

It's so humid and heavy today combined with smoke from the forest fires up north I'm noy doing anything in the garden today. Water the potted stuff but that's it.
The smoke is so heavy you can feel it in the back of your throat.

Sweetcorn is doing well in my garden this year. Probably have some ready by weeks end. But the tomatoes are suffering bad. Mother nature just cannot seem to get the watering right this year

Been an amazing year in the CO mountains for growing. Rain steady but not too much. Funny just how different things can be a thousand miles away!

What would be planted on top of the plastic? Or did you mean in holes through it?
Cut holes through it where you plant your seedlings. I also have seen adapters to put on a 100,000 btu torch to melt the holes.
I am starting to research ways to plant seeds through it also. It will be time consuming punching a hole for every seed but nowhere near as much as weeding is.
Next year I am definitely putting my strawberries in plastic.

So, silly question. What watering method do you use with the plastic, a soaker hose underneath?

We use drip irrigation, with a digital timer at the faucet!
You can get porous landscape fabric. I usually just put the hose on the plastic near each plant and it finds it's way down through.
A soaker hose would be slick for row crops and strawberries.

Beans not looking good. Potatoes and corn look good cucumber and cantaloupe plants drying up. Tomato and pepper plants look ok.
I was out looking at my fruit trees... the deer really, REALLY like those which I planted this spring. I don't know how they found them in the tall grass. I knocked a circle around each tree with my weedwhacker so that I can see them when I mow this weekend.
I can't complain though, it's only the second time in years that I've seen any deer sign here at all. Maybe they are starting to make a comeback. Hopefully they will still be around when the season opens. Right now I'd be happy if they just ate my beans and left my trees alone.

Did someone say large egg? This came from a chicken. I was stunned and had I not collected it myself would have thought someone was yanking my chain. Those are grade A large brown eggs surrounding it. My parents used to sell eggs and the old man got a sizer at an auction, more for show than anything else.
Our average eggs wouldn't even fit on it and those that did went past the largest size it registered. It was no wonder our hens raised a clatter when they dropped one of those bad boys.
