Regarding the cutting accident, we had a welder killed on a job back in the early 70's on a similar incident except he was trying to tack up a 40 foot joint of 36" pipe in a 25 foot high pipe rack. He got the top tack in and had a large gap on the bottom. He had a large crane pick up on the fixed end of pipe to close the gap which didnt close because the sides were metal bound. Fitter didnt notice that and kept flagging the crane to pick up on the pipe with the welder sitting on top. This was also before cranes had load indicator to tell how much load he has. Finally as the 40 foot joint cleared the rack on the far end, the top tack broke. This was about a 2" long tack with 6010 and it held long enough to raise the whole joint up. However when the tack broke the spring action tossed the welder up and over the outside of the rack where he fell to his death. This was before we mandated 100% tie off 100% of the time with safety harness. Properly applied, 6010 will hold a lot of weight on a straight pull like that and 7018 will hold even more.

Don't throw out that 7018 yet, the new stuff isn't that bad!

No way I am throwing them out. I havnt even opened the box yet. And they cost me about $30....
I havnt even thrown out the box of 1/16 inch 6013 rods. I had first tried welding some 1/16 inch wall box with 3/32 6011. It didnt work well.... I decided to try the thin 6013s because I really didnt want to gas weld it. No matter what I did they would not make a good joint. They would either only make a bead on one piece, or they would make a bead on both pieces with a bead of slag in between. It also didnt help that they are too thin for my shortstub to really grab onto. Kind of have to wedge them in at an angle....

First time I tried 6013 was an impulse buy at Lowes, Lincoln 6013 5lb box. These rods were horrible! No matter what machine I ran them on they got colder the further the rod burned down:confused2:. It didn't take long for me to figure out I had to really lay the rod angle over, and run them hot. I recently bought some Forney 6013, I like them a lot better.

I was doing some t-joints with 1/16 wall 2x4 box. I am building a shop press/weld bend tester. And it didnt seem at all like arc blow, it just would not weld right. These were the lincoln 6013s. The air liquide brand ones and the powerfist ones from princess auto seem to work much better.

Don't you have an AC only machine?
AC is the number one killer of arc blow, that an aluminum Tig welding is all AC is good for! :D
