Need info on Farmtrac 665 , trouble shooting power steering.

Don't know much about troubleshooting steering problems, but I'm curious as I have a 665. The steering pump shares the same reservoir with the transmission. The easy stuff would be ensuring plenty of fluid, filter not blocked. What it's doing? Can you describe the symptoms? If you jack the front-end up, do you get any wheel movement. Likely, the problem would be in the steering block, the pump or the cylinder. I have the service manual for the tractor and can post up some pics of the steering section if you need them.

This is a friends machine , trying to help. Don't have a manual. Claims dealer replaced an O- ring in steering & it worked for a time. Must be talking about the cylinder ?

There's a front and back o-ring on the pump. There's a couple of o-rings in the steering unit and a lip ring that is installed with a special installer tool. And yes, the cylinder has several packing rings. If you find out what happens, keep me posted.

Thanks, if you have any trouble shooting info or pictures , all would be helpful. All of the hydraulics work , not the power steering.

I am assuming " PM " means pump motor ? Was advised by owner that hydr. work but very slow. Could be the pump. Have changed hydr. oil & filters. Does your manual explain how to bleed the system ?

Sorry, I meant "PM" as in private message. I changed out my hydraulic/steering/trans fluid when I first got my tractor. There's no bleeding procedure, just run it for a few minutes. The trans, steering and hydraulic takes 80W-90 gear oil. There are a couple of flow knobs under the seat by the floor that might affect the lift arm speed. The steering pump and main pump are separated but share the same reservoir, which would explain why the other hydraulics are working. Your friend might have to get the steering pump tested, but the problem could be in the steering unit - lots of springs, checkvalves, and balls in there.

If you send me your email address, I have a couple of PDFs for you on the steering system.
