Was mowing the other day nothing to bad and all of a sudden the mower sounded like it was going to fly apart. Killed the pto went back to the shop and got underneath the mower to see what was up. Had some wire in the blades, cleaned it all up and now I can't move the shaft on the mower to line up splines on pto. Is there something I should be looking for ? I have literally 2 hrs on the mower. I'm a tractor noon so spell it out with crayons lol

Are you saying you can't turn the the gearbox/blades by trying to turn the PTO shaft coming out of the gearbox towards the tractor?

Take one of the belt covers off and see if you can turn the gearbox/blades that way. Or raise the mower, turn the tractor off and rear underneath it and see if you can turn one of the blade assemblies by hand. If you can turn it one of those ways, then all the resistance you're feeling by trying to turn the PTO shaft is just the resistance of the belt being tight on the pulleys.

If that's the case, then instead of turning the PTO shaft on the mower, turn the tractor off and turn the output shaft coming out of the tractor to line up the splines on the mating female PTO coupler coming from the mower.

Finish mowers are not as easy to turn by hand at the PTO shaft as a brush hog because of the tightness of the belts.

To turn the PTO shaft on the 3pt finish mower, I would suggest getting a foot long piece of 1/2" rebar, or a foot long piece of 1/2" black iron pipe and run it through the u-joint on the PTO shaft. That should be small enough to slide through the u-joint and give you enough leverage to rotate it. You shouldn't need to turn it but a couple degrees to get it to line up with the PTO output shaft on your tractor.

However.... if you were able to turn the PTO shaft by hand BEFORE getting the wire caught up in it, I wonder if there's still some wire that's wrapped around one of the spindles so tightly, that it won't turn without a lot a of torque?? The only way I know to tell for sure would be to remove the covers, release the tension on the belt(s), and then turn each spindle by hand. If one seems bound up, then it might need to be pulled off of the deck to get the wire out of it.
