I have a older farmi winch. I while back I forgot that I didn't have the tractor end of the PTO shaft attached . I drove the tractor and broke off the yoke on the tractor end. I replaced an under sized PTO shaft I had laying around. . This was not an easy task as I have found the PTO shaft on this unit is a 6 spline but will only accept a pto shaft on a certain way . Only 1 way will it slide on properly to allow the pin to lock. Second use it just twisted the pto shaft right off. Thinking I better get a better PTO shaft.

After looking for parts for the original PTO it was about 1/2 $ of new to get it going again.
Ended up buying a new pto shaft series 4. Before I cut to length I thought I would see if it will slide on.
No way I tried 6 x twice and will not go on far enough to engage the locking pin.

All the spline on the yoke look the same . Not sure if the splines on the winch are tapered.
What am I missing . What is unique to the farmi winch??
My next plan is to remove the locking pin and try again but I don't think its the problem.

Get a good light, clean all the dirt and grease off the tractor or winch pto 6 spline shaft so it is all shiny. You have to look very very close but I bet you might find one or more of the splines is deformed right at the lock pin groove. Either humped up or or widened out or both. Caused by the shock of the lock pin when the shaft broke. It takes very little deformation to stop the engagement and can easily be fixed with a small file if that is what you find.

I bought a used winch which had a broke shaft stuck on it and that is what I found. Filed a couple splines down and all has been well for 3 years.

So I cleaned it all up . Did notice a few small burrs filed them off still will not go on. Got a grinder in there and took off all the square edged. Still not going on. Got the original yoke . Hammered it on it goes on . Need a crowbar to get it off.
turned one spline and hammered on again pulled it off. Turned again hammered it on. Pulled it off. Time for the new one now. Hammered it on locked in position. Ready to go logging. The original one when I took it apart the pin lock was pushed in and welded. So now its not welded but Its not going to fall off.
