1951 Farmall Super C
I have a farmall super c that I have just purchased and it needs the carb overhauled. I went to our local dealer and he wasnt very helpful on a kit for it. Guess it wasn't new enough to be on his computer. Then went to the parts store. The tractor I have has a carter ub 0-653 carb on it. The parts store looked it up and said that the tractor should have a zenith carb on it according to thier books and they did not show a kit for the carter. I have found 1 avail. on a website but was wanting to know if you guys have any prefs. on rebuilding what I have or go with the zenith. If I go with the zenith I will have to pay for the core also. The gasket is shot on the carb is why I need the kit. Also it comes with a new throttle shaft and from reading the posts it may be a good idea to replace it. Is there anyway to access the archives as I have not found how to do it yet if there is. The tractor is a 1951 model year. Thank you, Rick

Well with no response I will go ahead and list what I did and results as they become avail. to those who are checking the thread. I wen't ahead and ordered the carb kit for the rebuild of the carter carb. I had read in other forums some people did not have good luck with the carter and some did have good luck so we will go ahead and try it. Ordered new seat cover and alum. spinner knob as well. According to e-mails they will be shipped on monday. More later as work progresses.

Wrench57,

This is the vintage of tractor that I grew up with. My Dad had a 1950 C that he sold in 1990 for more money than he bought it for new (granted the 1990 $'s didn't have the buying power of the 1950 $'s, but it is still cool). He also had a 1959 or '60 Farmall 200 (essentially a Super C ?) with the 2pt quick hitch. I remember him putting a carb kit in the C when I was a very little tot, but have no idea which carb was in either tractor. What sort of work are you going to use this tractor for?

Good luck with the rebuild.

Frank

farmeratheart, This tractor will have an easy life at my place. It will be used to take care of our garden. When I found it it had a 2 bar corrugator mounted on 2 point lift hitch along with some cultivator parts throwed in. It has the single wheel front. Eventual plans are to get a 2 bottom plow and mower for it. I have some leads on these and will see how they pan out. I have my own small mechanic shop here so during slow times I am planning on complete restore which will keep posting about for those interested so if they come across something that I had worked on that they may have a question on they could get the answer there or contact me. Got the carb kit yesterday and put the carb back together. Wind and rain going pretty strong so will put back on when calms down. Have a 350 Quincy air compressor in my shop working on the head on it and a 3408 to overhaul sitting on a stand that I just got the parts for also so no lack of work to do.:) Rick

Got the carb reinstalled, turned the fuel back on to get it started and low and behold the shutoff apparently has a small leak as there is no fuel in tank:smiley_aafz:. Oh well one more part to work on before startup. Bad thing is it appears to be stuck in tank. Anyone with idea on how to get it freed up for removal short of heat:shocked:

Well my shop has gotten extremly busy:thumbsup: so have not had time to get back to the super c. Will continue with the postings when work on it starts up again. Did find that wiring to the battery OR to the coil was backward so am begining to have more doubts as to the validity of the prev. owners claim that it was used untill recently. This may turn into a major rebuild project instead of a little tuneup but will keep posting on it as time to work on it becomes avail.

Got the battery and coil wiring to match correctly and tuneup complete. I got the tractor running and went ahead and used it to corrugate the garden. It looks like I will have to pull the tank to fix the leak on the sediment bowl. I tried taking it off the tank in place and it will not budge so hopefully can get it to seal when I have tank off and turned over. I'm also going to have to get a new float for the carb. as the old one is hanging up from a previous poor weld job. More later, Rick

Thanks Rick for the info, I'll be checking your progress from time to time. I'm interested in finding a restoration project myself. My neighbor has an old Farmall stored on his property that I have my eye on.

Juggler8, Things have been pretty busy around here so have not been able to do much on restore. I have used the tractor a couple of times to recorrugate the garden but as far as the restoration it will have to wait for slower times. What kind of farmall were you looking at? I have always liked the red iron ever since dad and granddad had been running them on the farm. I will post as things are done but it will probably be this winter if things slow down. I'll post pictures as work progresses also. Rick

Keep in mind that a lot of the old farm tractors used a positive-ground system.

Super C came out with either a Carter or a Zenith carb. I know Carter also made carbs for Chev. cars, like I had on my 50, 51 & 52 Chev.'s. I don't think they are in business now, as I believe Zenith now makes new carb's for Carter for replacement on old tractors. The parts dealer you went to apparently doesn't know too much about old tractors & doesn't have the books for reference. There were a LOT of different Zenith carb.'s made for the Super "C", so you must be careful to get the exact and correct replacement kit. Nine times out of 10 it's the float, if you have a problem. Sometimes even when the float is brand new out of the box. Put in another brand new one and it'll run fine. Go figure. :confused2:

BoonvilleKid, You are correct on the diff. zeniths as this is what was on it. The float is still bad but with a little carressing I can get it to run. The plans were to work on it this winter but had a customer bring me a large project on modifying a jeepster, putting in an LT1 350 and 4L60E automatic, disc brakes, complete rewire, power steer etc so the super c has not made it in and other Jobs have been lining up from other customers so not looking like it will be anytime soon but I do still plan on restoring it and will be gathering up the parts for when the time comes and still plan on posting it on here when I do the work on it.

Wrench57, what brand and number of spark plugs are you using in your Super C?
I've got the manual, but the numbers given in the manual are over 50-years old and no one has a reference book that carry those numbers. I know that the plugs have to be just so-so or you'll not get them in due to the slim clearance between the socket and the engine wall. Have you found the plug that Farmall specified for the Super C? I believe that AC C87 may be correct. Also, AutoLite 3116.

BoonevilleKid, not sure what the plug numbers are, will have to check them. Havn't had a chance this winter to work on any of my stuff as I have over 600 hrs in the jeepster project and other work lining up every day. Once I started on the jeepster more got added as the owner was real happy how well it was turning out so it became a bigger project than planned at first. I walk past my super c each day going to the shop and know that some day it will be new again also but while the work is there have to take care of it first. This is what I was working on all winter if anyone would like to see the build on it its located on Helpwrench.net under automotive project build threads 67 jeepster LT1-350 4L60E. I can only hope my super c turns out as nice as this jeepster did for the owner that I built it for.

BoonvilleKid, I checked the plugs today and the ones that the parts store had sold me when I got the tractor running were champion D16. Not a big fan of champion plugs but as I recall at the time that I got them they told me that these were the only ones that they could get that crossed over to the ones that I took out of it. Rick

wrench57,

I have the same carb in my C. I am having trouble finding a rebuild kit. Napa says one isn't available. I was curious where you got yours?

Thanks!

I don't know why NAPA would tell you this. I bought one from them. I also bought one from Steiner Tractor Parts. When you buy from NAPA, you kinda get a "one size fits all" kit, so I wouldn't suggest you buy from them. The number you need, before ordering, is cast in the top of the bowl (for Zenith). That's a very important number as there are a LOT of different rebuild kits for the Zenith carbs.
