My 1947 Farmall A was working fine a month ago and started right up today but when I went to put it in gear it would just grind and I could not put it in gear. When the motor is off I can shift it into each gear with the clutch depressed. I fear major clutch problems but maybe just an adjustment. Can anyone help me troubleshoot and fix this clutch problem? Thanks.

Sounds like you clutch disk has stuck to the flywheel or pressure plate. put it in gear and depress the clutch and tryto start it. it might break loose. If that don't work start it in neutral and warn it up. then shut it off and place it in first gear. then start it up in gear and drive around with the clutch pedal depressed and it might come free. if that don't work the tractor will need to come apart and see whats wrong. You might adjust the clutch release rod however I don't think that's you problem.

I'll try that tomorrow, thanks. How do you adjust the clutch release rod?

Glad I could help. Of course as old as I am ive been there done that a couple of times. some folks will use a block of wood wedged so as to hold the clutch released when storing a tractor.

Right on. I used blocks on all my tractors to prevent clutch sticking problems.

My 2 year old great nephew came up to me today and asked to drive the "little red tractor" I said sure, and he gave me the biggest hug. After that he stood on the platform and I sat in the seat behind him driving around for an hour in first gear. He went home with a big smile on his face - a future TBN member. Little did he realize the tractor belonged to his Great Great Grandfather.

My B2910 Kubota came with a little block of wood to stick in the clutch linkage to keep clutch from rusting to plate. Things haven't in all these years.
