Thought I'd start a new thread about my Dad's new 5085M and share some info about attachments. Dad ordered his tractor sometime in July this year (2012) and took delivery early in October. Since then we have driven from here in Ga. about 1.5 hours south of Atlanta to Charlotte N.C. and picked him up some attachments from Wildkat attachments. We wanted to see the different sizes and builds of everything they offered. Let me say that I own a debris grapple for my 110 and now dad an 84" smooth bucket with tooth bar and 74" Root Rake/grapple. I can honestly say that I don't think it's possible to get a better quality built attachment for the price than from Wildkat. So far we've been impressed with everything on the tractor including the H260 FEL. Dad opted for a skidsteer front hookup so he could swap with his bobcat and my 110. The hookup is a really nice upgrade. He pretty much optioned the tractor out with Power rev. plus (32/16) tranny, H260 FEL, H.D 3 pt.hitch, and too many other bells and whistles to mention. But I thought I would post a pic on his new toy and talk about

the buying experience. Dad did have a few bugs to work out with his new machine but of course the local Deere dealer took care of them pretty fast. I'll post some more later on the "Ordering experience" and "Glitch fixes". Still, this is One Bad Deere and Dad has waited his whole life to enjoy it!

Oh also...thought you guys might want to see the tractor with R4's. I know most folks go with the Ag style.

The one is with the Wildkat brand Rootrake and the other is at the dealer before taking delivery and also before widening the R4 tires and ballasting.

Nice setup:thumbsup:

So are you clearing land for pasture? Looks like an 8' landplane would be something you can use to smooth out some of the areas.

Ha! Funny you said that, we're still kickin ourselves for not checking into a landplane for sale down the road. We're clearing around 25 acres for pasture. The hardest thing is trying to burn a huge pile of dirt with a few sticks in it! Doesn't work so good!

I wouldn't sweat the small stuff for pasture, run a disk over it and plant some grass. The cows and time will get rid of the small stuff in short order. Just keep balers out of there in the meantime.

Sounds good to me. Dad has probably ground a few thousand stumps and we've been running the rootrake and 955 Cat loader over most of it. He just purchased a nice used Taylor disc plow. I would say it's about 10-12 feet wide and has hydraulic lift on it. We're curious to see how the new tractor pulls it. Good bit of plow for that size tractor but we'll see. I'm pretty sure it'll pull it when all 4 tires are spinning..haha.

I think you can spend an inordinate amount of time and money trying to get all the small stuff into a burn pile. Left on the ground and spread out I think it will rot faster and with cows walking over it while grazing shouldn't take very long. I would spend more money on lime, fertilizer and seed instead of diesel fuel. Stumps and large trunks would take alot longer though and I would wan't to get them out. I learned from my dad and grandfather to pay attention to the weather when picking the time to work over a burn pile. When you can get in there and have the dirt crumble and not stick to the wood is the best time to restack.

Good luck with your project.

Any idea if the 5085M would pull a 10' land plane? Also any idea on what a 10' land plane is worth used in really good condition? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

You should be able to pull a 10ft landplane without problems. Your 110 can pull an 8' in most cases as an example. I built my 8' plane and used my 110 to smooth my lawn area prior to the arrival of the new 4520. The higher hp 4520 will pull it faster though. In new ground I would lean more towards lower ground speeds and larger size landplanes. I wouldn't wan't to snag a hidden object and go through the windshield and second the larger the plane frame is and longer the skids the better it will function smoothing out the land. Still needs to fit the environment, gates, between trees and other obstacles and then are you planning to use it on roads. Also transport issues to consider too. All that said for your intended use a 10ft landplane would be a good size for smoothing fields. You could build a 10ft landplane for about 1000 to 1200 bucks that would be heavy duty similar to the one I built but larger tubing sizes and clevis hitch. Might want to consider a smaller landplane for the driveways and a larger landplane for the field work.

Heres two landplanes I have built for landscape work primarily with the blades set straight the smaller one is 4' wide and 420 lbs and the larger is 8' and about 950lbs. Material costs for both were about $100/ft of width.

Hey thanks for the info. We figured as much when we pulled the 10' Taylor Way Disc Harrow yesterday. A man at the estate sale where dad bought the Harrow said he owned the same one and wasn't sure an 85hp machine would pull it very easily but we soon realized yesterday that it would probably pull about 5 of them at once. We were pretty amazed at the power on tap. Those are some great looking levelers man. Looks as good or better than store bought. Dad and I are always fabbing something up too. Some of my welds look great and some...well you know. Hey who makes that 110 cab? That thing looks pretty cool! I priced one awhile back but couldn't swing $10k. Did you fab that cab?

Thanks for the comments I built the planes because I couldn't find what I wanted. The 8' is heavy duty and I will add pieces to make it a clevis hitch when I have time.

The cab is a Laurin Eclipse model and has been a great addition with hvac. These cabs are louder than factory cabs but I am glad I didn't wait for Deere to come out with one.

Congrats. You and your dad will really enjoy that machine!

You mentioned he got the HD 3pt hitch. Make sure it actually has the HD lift links and telescoping arms. I ordered the HD Hitch as well, as the on components that the HD were the cylinders themselves. Took months of the dealer fighting with Deere and in the end, the dealer absorbed the cost and ordered me the missing HD components.

Man, cool hearing from you pclausen. Yeah, I'm pretty positive the hitch is all HD. But, yeah Dad is really enjoying his new toy. I'm just glad he's safe and comfortable to be honest. He still works like a fire ant and has pretty poor vision thanks to macular degeneration so at least he's not suckin' dust anymore or fightin' bees. Plus he can't drive legally anymore so there you have it... "Re-tired" courtesy of John Deere.

Beautiful-nice seeing the R-4's! By the way, you and Jenk'sPh mention your "land planes". What is the big advantage over a box blade?

Yeah Thanks...on Dad's behalf. I think Green is the best color too...haha. But so does Deere. They're pretty proud of their machines..$$..I was talking about a larger type of leveler that looks like an overgrown box blade (10') with hydraulic raised/lowered wheels on the back. Would take a pretty strong machine to pull and probably just moves more dirt like a pan machine. The other levelers are a little smaller and may take a few extra passes to shave the dirt down but those type are nice too. I like the design where the cutting edges are on an angle but not sure how it works any different coming at the dirt at an angle..? Then you have a standard box blade and one of my favorites..a rollover. Now that's a handy implement. 3 tools in one. Ripping, cutting and leveling. Main thing would be to size implement for the machine and that would increase productivity in and of itself. I would say weight of implement has alot to do with the ability to level too. Just my opinion. But Jenkinsph, pclausen, Akfish or several others on the forum could prob answer your question alot better. That's my stab at it..haha!!

The skids on a landplane make it easy and quick to smooth out a driveway or field, makes flattening an area very easy. The skids can be adjusted easily with a hydraulic top link and then follow the ground with the hitch arms down and floating. This way when the front wheels drop down the landplane doesn't pop up leaving a mound of dirt in the wrong place.

My boxblade is better for times when I need to move dirt more aggresively and is easier to use on a slope. It will also backup much closer to a building and wall reducing the amount of clean up. The boxblade will move more dirt in one pass than the landplane.

Both have their place and the landplane is perfect for smoothing lawn areas, pastures and roads. The boxblade is better for confined spaces.

Here's my boxblade with tnt works great.

Thx guys- I also found another thread on landplanes. Nothing like the right tool for the job! One thing I don't have is a hyd. top link. I guess that should be next on my list. I just did my 500' driveway with asphalt millings. Started off using the box blade but then borrowed a buddies 96" Landpride power rake-with power angler. Now that is the way to fly! If I didn't have access to that however, I think I can see the advantage of a plane over a box blade.

Here's a couple more pics of the 3pt hitch and R4's on Dad's 5085M. Just thought some guys/girls might want to see the R4's on this model Deere. By the way, that oil down by the drawbar is a result of not getting the oil drip tray for the SCV couplers up by the top link. Dad said..."we can make one"..haha. Guess we'll make 1. Or buy more degreaser...

I like pics, especially of John Deere Tractors so here's a few more to show the H260 FEL, the skid steer hook up, the R4's and few other angles. Also a pic of a bracket we made to add flat face couplers beside the Ag style couplers on the FEL.
