F250 4x4 6.2 vs 7.3?

I don't know about the 7.3L, but after 10 years of running an F250 6.2L my overall average fuel use is 12mpg. Highway 14.2-14.9 mpg depending on terrain.

My early '99 7.3 in an extra cab short bed 4x4 has always gotten right at 17 mpg average. It's the automatic with 3.73 rear. Pulling a fully loaded 14k gooseneck it got right at 15 mpg.

A gasoline engine pulling a fully loaded gooseneck getting 15 mpg, that's the one I want if that's legit numbers, unless your talking about a diesel 7.3.

My brother used to own the 6.2 and it blew up right after it went out of warranty. But that was 8 years ago, so things might be better now. I used to own the 7L in a 250 and it was a horrible gas guzzler. Basically it went from gas station to gas station.

This is a good question. I'm curious to hear reports as well. Everything I've read says the 7.3L is a workhorse!!!

You have a 7.3 Powerstroke, awesome engine. But the 7.3 I am referring to is the new pushrod gas V8, named Godzilla.

I went from a 2016 Super Cab Long Bed 6.2L/3.73/6 speed to a 2022 Crew Cab Long Bed 7.3L/4.30/10 speed.

Performance pulling my 34’ 8000-9000lb travel trailer is drastically improved. I can cruise up hills on the highway in 7th gear that would’ve dropped the 6.2L into 2nd gear. I expected an improvement, but I’ve been really surprised at how big the improvement is.

It’s hard to tell at this point, since I’ve only got a little more than 3000 miles on the new one, but fuel economy appears to be similar. I would estimate the 7.3L is averaging .5-1mpg less than the 6.2L. If I baby the 7.3L, I can get 15-16mpg, but driving it regular, it’s more like 12.5-13. I averaged about 13.5 in the 6.2L. With comparable gearing, they might be the same? Towing economy has been 8-9mpg.

A lot of variables with the body, gearing and transmission, but in my opinion, fuel economy is close enough to not be a big decision point in 6.2L vs 7.3L. I’d go 7.3L every time.

That's kind of what I was thinking, but unfortunately it wasn't obvious to me, not being a ford man I didn"t know what years ford made the 7.3 gasoline engine.

Bought new 1995 F250 with 7.3 powerstroke manual trans. 373 13 to 14 mpg. Big drop when towing. Light duty, heavy truck. Dealer maintained. Many repair bills: motor & electrical. Engine cost more in small constant repairs than whole truck did originally. Sold at 110K.

Bought new 2002 F250 with 7.3 powerstroke automatic trans. 373. 14 to 15 mpg. 10 towing Same duty & service. Hardly any problems. Sold at 150K with less than $7500 in repairs.

Now using Toyotas replacing Fords: 260K,& 190K. It pains me to admit these are better trucks.
Stronger, way more reliable, more comfortable, slightly better MPG.

Aren’t you comparing a 1/2 ton to a 3/4 ton truck?

I think you are probably referring to the 460, which was 7.5 liters. Ford did make several 7 L engines (430 MEL, 427 and 428 FE, 429 Lima) but none ever made it into the F-250, at least not from any U.S. factory.

Had a few 250's 350's with the 460 . Great engine past everything but a gas station. Seriously thinking about 7.3 gas whenever their available to be ordered again. Ford A plan is a great thing. Employe pricing is the only way a new truck can be affordable to me.

I have a 6.2, 2018 super cab long box. No issues in towing anything, I’m usually 10k or less on weight.

I wanted a 7.3, however with the market I couldn’t find one in a reasonable distance at an acceptable price.

Given the option I would go 7.3 if ordering/buying new.
