Having a issue with my f1145 diesel mower. When I turn the key the fuel solenoid clicks open, than it clicks closed a few seconds later. If I manually hold the fuel lever open it will run. As soon as I let go it returns to closed and the mower dies. Anybody have any ideas as to what could be the problem.

Fuel solenoid may be bad, the question is it sink or two coil unit. A single coil if voltage present and it closes means that the coil is weak and won't hold against the return spring. If two coil unit, the pull in is working but the hold in coil bad if voltage is present on both coils. So check for voltages on the plug to the solenoid. My bet is your will find solenoid needs replacing. But make sure by checking for the voltages.

Great advise from Kish. One thing to remember, if you have the two coil fuel solenoid, if you should be manually testing the solenoid, never apply voltage to the pull-in coil for more then af few seconds, otherwise you will burn out tha pull-in coil.

The two coil fuel solenoid will have two wires in the connector. The engine provides the ground connection.

Most on gas engines will be one or two wire, but on the diesel most are 3 or 4 wire (2 coil units). I don't understand why, may be a safety thing for gas vapors to use less wires and ground to engine.

My [ older model ] F935 does this if the seat switch gets dirt, grass and tree branches under it. If mower clutch does it (engine running, the parking brake sensor lever has bent from apply force.

JD uses a two coil on most their smaller diesel engines and it is very common as you stated the "hold" coil typically going bad. It's been covered a lot on starting issues in other forums. That would be my first thing to check.
