Hello

I am new to this and to tractors to. I have a 1972 MF 135 3 cyl Perkins Diesel with 1550 hours that I just purchased a month ago. Yesterday while blowing snow I noticed the ammeter becoming errati....needle fluctuating alot....I used a voltmeter across the bat terminals and the voltage was going from 13.5-16.5.....My tractor has an alternator with an external regulator....Can someone please telll me or give me a diagram or simple instructions so I may remove both and install a simple GM delco alternator.

Thank You

You might just have a bad regulator, or a bad ground somewhere in the system, or even a slipping belt. Regulator contacts can be serviced if they aren't solid state. If all else fails, you might try buying a GM style " single wire" alternator, popular with hot rodders . If you look for a lower amperage unit, say about 60 amps, you can keep the price down. A single wire to the battery positive terminal, plus the alternator case well grounded through the mounting, is all that is necessary. You will, however, have to come up with a mounting system , a belt adjustment feature, and the appropriate drive belt.
