I plan to stucco the rest of the house, now it is half stucco and old vinyl siding for the rest - the house is a work in progress, I am sure you understand :)

Anyway, for the NW side I would like to add some external insulation, since that side is exposed to the wind the most and in winter you can feel it is the coldest end of the house.

What are my options? I remember from overseas styrofoam boards with integrated grit/mesh. You just nailed them on and the grid was ready for the typical two layered stucco. Is there anything similar in the USA?

Or should I just nail 1" styrofoam on the wall and the stucco mesh on top of it?

Suggestions and/or shared experience highly appreciated.

Dryvit is an excellent system provided it is applies correctly. Unfortunately it is also very expensive with costs nearly the same as brick when done commercially.

Are you going to use real stucco or the plastic/paint like stucco that came out a few decades ago? In either case you have to have a good drain plain between the stucco structure and the house structure. The plastic/paint like stucco led to many lawsuits and tearoffs in my area. The problem was that water could get behind/around the plastic/paint stucco but it could not get out and thus cause rot, water damage, and mold.

I can't remember the name of the product but hopefully someone else will.

I would check out Building Science Corporation for detailed drawings and specifications for stucco walls.

Later,
Dan
