The exhaust on my 4110 is described as "under the hood". There is an option for a verticle exhaust stack, is there a reason or advantage to that design over the other? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

To me, the stack would be a disadvantage. Looks like it would be up there to get caught on something or blowing exhaust in your face?

Either way the exhaust exits, the muffler would still be under the hood.

My last ride had a vertical exhaust and I thought there must be a better way. It made more noise, always caught branches, and collected rainwater then gave you a shower when you started the diesel. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

My TC-40D is under the hood exhaust, and discharges low. It is very quiet, out of the way, and is a much better deal all the way around. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I second (or third?) the nod to under hood. Brutus has a vertical exhaust stack and it's always catching a branch. Just couple weeks ago, went into woods to pull a young lad & his girlfriend /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif (truck) out of a mud puddle and knocked the exhaust stack over, bending one of the tabs that go over the turbo housing in the process. (later to be bent back when I fixed it)

It's in the way visually, WOULD catch water but for the flapper I put on it, and is (to me) more in the way.

Also, I have to remove it to take the hood off, whereas if it was under the hood it would not be in the way.

I much prefer the vertical exhaust. The 4300 always blew fumes in my face and it is less so with the 990. I also think it looks better. I don't go through the woods though.

heh heh heh guess there is never a "right" answer huh!

I think the underhood is probably less likely to snag on things. It might add a little heat though.

I have no problem with my vertical stack but....then again I like diesel fumes /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Actually you only really smell it when you first start up and when you rev it momentarily and it's still only a light wiff

I have the vertical pipe coming out of the hood with a backward turn on the end of the pipe to prevent rain from entering the pipe. To me, this is a good design compromise, as it puts the exhaust high enough in the air so that I don't smell it./forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif But as has been previously stated, it does impair your forward vision a bit./forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

My father owned several Massey Fergusons with the exhaust routed under the tractor and exiting behind the rear axle. This was great as long as you were the driver and did not have to work behind the tractor and as long as you turned off the engine every time you changed implements. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Most of the newer CUT's seem to have the exhaust exiting from the front of the engine, pointed to the ground at a slight angle and maybe I went for a test drive on the wrong day, but on the 4330 Kubota I test drove, I could not seem to get away from the smell of the exhaust no matter which way I turned in the dealers lot.

I personally like the cab tractors where the exhaust stack is attached to the right front post of the cab structure where it does not impair your vision and the exhaust exits up into the atmosphere. I guess there is no perfect setup or routing for the exhaust, you just have to use the type that best fits what you are going to use the tractor for or you are stuck with what it is equipped with from the factory if there is no other option available.

One thing that will be interesting to see in the future is how the new emissions standards are met by the manufacturers and how they affect that good old diesel smell that we all know and love. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I want some of that yummy, french fry smelling bio-diesel!

I never noticed any vision problem. It does hit stuff in the woods but that stuff would have hit my face next so maybe it's actually a benefit? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Not on my tractor the entire unit is vertical out of the hood.

Sorry about that F350Lawman. I thought it was just the pipe (past the muffler) that was vertical.

Well no need to apologize, you might be right. Maybe on his model it is just a difference on how the pipe vents??? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Guess the only real advantage to top mount would be if you are operating in dry brush and want to minimize the chances of the hot exhaust tip from contacting tall grass. Not really a concern for me but I had no choice on my model.

For most folks the underhood probably is neater appearing and gives sleeker lines. I like my no frills, straight geared retro looking 790 though /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

when I still had my JD 790 I had both the tall exhaust pipe
and the short stack. When I used the short stack
I had to breath more diesel fumes. When I used the tall
stack the fumes were less but occassionally I had a hot
piece of carbon hit me in the face and it was a real hassle
to manuever around small low hanging branches.
I eventually opted for the short stack most of the time.
Neither seemed ideal for me. I like the low exhaust down
near the front axle on my 4310 better than either location
on the 790.

My exhaust pipe exits to the front and down. I'm going to cut it and make it exit strait to the side. The downward direction blows dust into a huge cloud. The forward direction of the pipe catches on stray branches to the point I cary plyers to rebend it and pull branches out of it on a regular basis.

Century 2535

By backhoe exhaust goes strait up. I've never had a problem with fumes or catching on branches. As far as obstructing the view, I don't even notice it. The flaper valve wore out and I need to replace it, but that's only $10 at TS.

Not that it's a huge issue, but I think my local co-op charges about $5.00 for a 2 1/2 inch flapper.

I have often thought about getting the vertical stack option. When doing loader work the exhaust will blow mulch and landscape fabric all over the place. When it's dry and dusty out the exhaust causes a duststorm. I cut all the branches in most of my yard so i can get clearance for the tractor rops so i am not worried about hitting a muffler. I don't have a vertical muffler yet because it costs money I don't want to spend. If I was doing landscaping fo it for a living I would not hesitate to get a vertical muffler.

My exhaust originally exited in front of the front axel. It kicked up dust and occasionally I noticed sparks coming out when operating after dark. I bought the kit from JD for $89 and installed the vertical exhaust. No more dust kicked up, sparks die before getting to the ground, and no breathing fumes. Besides, I think it looks more like a tractor now /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.

I like it.

I love rain cap exhausts. On our Massey 135 I like the pinging sound when the cap hits the pipe at idle. Don't know why they don't put these on tractors no more.
