Let's see now, Where to begin... Guess we'll start with Case/drott. Here's a Drott 50. 4-53 Detroit diesel. 1yd If I remember. Case later completely absorbed Drott and made machines until the late 80's as the 980 and 1080 Case excavators.

I'll have to find some more Case photos to make that better...
Next in line is Cat alphabetically. The Cat 215, 225, 235, and 245 were designed and bulit in house. Here's a 225. Came out in '72. 125hp, 50,000ish lbs. 1yd-1 3/8yds. Wish I had a better shot; I'll look for more.

The 245 was the biggest in the series; Came out in '74. 325hp, 2yd-3.25yds for the standard machine. I don't have the weight but it's over 100,000lb.
They also built a front shovel version with either a 4 yard bottom dump bucket or a 5 yard front dump. The bottom dump was usually favored for the faster cycle time.
Here's a 245FS loading coal...

Cat started with the E series machines in '87. These were built in the Mitsu joint venture plant near Tokyo. The E70 thru E650 models were succeded in the 90's by the 300 series, models 301.5-385. Here's a cute little 301.5.

Now for some oddballs. Ford marketed (dunno who made em exactly) excavators in the 70's. I'm not sure if any made it to the states or if they were only for the European market. I only have a couple shots of these... H 42 somewhere in Europe.

Hi Scott Im a heavy equipment operator and enthusiast to. Thomas Koshersteidt has a webpage in German and English to. Its www.polytrac.de He did a thing a while back on Ford excavators. Most European machins have adfustable booms like the Ford to move the upper boom in or out to make it more suitable for heavy lifts. Also the ford has a mount to turn its boom/stick into a shovel by putting the crowd cylinder on the underside of the boom. Take care taylor Lambert

How about some info on Komatsu & Hitachi/JD?

It's my understanding that Komatsu makes the best excavators closely followed by Hitachi who also supplies John Deere.

Re: How about some info on Komatsu & Hitachi/JD?

They certainly are popular.... Best is a subjective term and is like saying JD is better than NH or Kubota.... All are really good or they wouldn't still make em....

Now for the links I promised...

Antique Caterpillar Owners Club is a great place to learn about all things Caterpillar. New or old, large or small, someone has been there done that.

Yesterday's Tractors has a heavy equipment section that is pretty good. I usually get my Case questions answered here. Some of the forums get a little political, but it dies down quickly.

IBDOZING is where the allis and IH/Komatu lovers like to hang, In my not very humble opinion, It's not as good as ACMOC above.

Beamish heavy haulers is an austrailian firm that is basicly a heavy equipment taxi service in Sydney. Lots of pics...

Land clearing Memories is a salute to the land clearing companies of the Vietnam war. Interesting bit of history...

Jungle Eaters is another site for the land clearing units of Vietnam.

Weird Deere outlines JD's industrial tractors from the begining up to the 70's. One can begin to see the JD backhoes lineage though it is faint.

That should due for now... I'll add more tomorrow....
