So I have never used the ether on my tractor. There is a spot to screw on an ether can below the steering wheel. My question is where can I get an ether can that screws on

I've never seen something labeled John Deere and only costing $4.00.

Buy two.

Use it sparingly, back in the days before glow plugs many diesels cylinders were prematurely worn out due to excessive ether use.

There one thing you need to know. The following is how I was taught when I was employed at a JD dealership from '66-'87. The starting fluid(ether) can will not screw on the JD 400 factory starting aid bracket. One needs to remove caps on both the bracket & starting aid also removing the top spray nozzle on starting fluid. While turning engine over when can is held up "briefly inside bracket" a shot of fluid will be sent down pipe to intake manifold which contains an orifice that limits amount of fluid that can be induced to engine at one time.

I have read about holding a rag in front of the air intake on a diesel,, soaked in gasoline,,
the gasoline fumes aid in starting a cold diesel,

This seems safer than ether,, if it works,,

Does anyone have first hand knowledge of gasoline fumes aiding in starting a diesel??

Holding a gas soaked rag in your hand sounds safer than giving a shot of ether from a spray can?

Yes gasoline on shop towel held over open intake will substitute for starting fluid as a starting aid. BTDT

I know a guy that ran his Duramax out of fuel, the batteries were weak,,
so,, rather than extensive cranking, he dribbled a few drops of diesel into the engine somehow,,,

upon cranking, one of the pistons promptly exited through the side of the block,,, :confused2:

So,, I am a little shy of doing anything like that,,,

There has to be more to the story of the pistons exit'ing through the side of the block, than those few drops of diesel. Much more, IMO. ;) just sayin.....
