The giant sequoias are having difficulty reproducing in their original habitat
I knew they needed fire but I did not know the rest of the story. Thank you for posting.

Also the Indians had a population of about 250,000. We now have 300,000,000. About 1000 times more people and pollution. The more people we have the more governmental controls we will have and the more care we must take with the environment.

No one really knows the size of pre-Columbian population of North America. That is an amazing thing in and of itself. It probably exceeded 5 million though. The pollution factor would be much higher than 1000:1 (modern:Native) in any case. I doubt if the Native People produced pollution that wasn't easily biodegradable. They are thought to have done a fair amount of intentional forest burns along the northeast coastal areas and perhaps other areas as well.

Where Historians Disagree

While it is difficult to determine exactly how many Natives lived in North America before Columbus,[5] estimates range from a low of 2.1 million (Ubelaker 1976) to 7 million people (Russell Thornton) to a high of 18 million (Dobyns 1983).

Thanks for the info. I suspect in some ways we are a lot more efficient than the Indians, but we have a lot more stuff and a lot more people so we have to be a lot more careful.

Thank you for that voice of reason. So disappointing to see so many members reacting with vitriol to specific politicians, political parties, and the EPA. We in NC are getting a serious taste of what happens when regulations are relaxed. Read about Governor McCrory (former Duke Power employee), Duke and recent coal ash spills. We have rivers and water supplies compromised and more in danger as a result of a "hands off" approach to regulation.

The way you make a stove burn cleaner is make it more efficient. When you make a stove more efficient you burn less wood.

I burn a Woodstock Fireview rated at 83% efficiency and I heat my 1700 sq. ft. house with 2 1/2 cords of hardwood per year. I suppose I could have bought a 50% efficiency wood furnace for a lot less money but then I would be cutting 4 or more cords of wood to heat the same house. My time constraints and my back appreciate the fact that I am cutting less wood to accomplish the same result and a third of my heat is not going up the chimney.

To the Chicken Littles on this forum, man up, get a decent stove, save some time and work ....and your back.

My Fireview has a catalytic converter which I have replaced once in the 7 years of ownership. I don't worry about particulates as we don't have problems like that around here. I just like that I do less work and get the same amount of heat for my reduced work.

Obviously that's a huge problem in America... The relaxed regulation:rolleyes:

Check the article on alternative-heating.com for a better "neutral" account of what the new EPA rules state. They are not coming in black helicopters to take your 20 year old wood stove. It is easy to spread panic and false information on the web and get everyones underwear in a wad. So check several sources or snopes or something before you contribute to the problem instead helping it.

Wood stoves limit the amount of air which makes them emit much more particulates than one that controls the fuel and has wide open air.

Seems like we could have a stove that uses no electricity that could be filled to last 8 hours yet burn clean. I'm all for clean air but one of those guys who doesn't want to pay for it.

Oh well back the the Patron!
