A friend has a craftsman manual transmission that specs EP 00 oil and is not finding it anywhere. I suspect this must be a very common transmission, about 25 years old.

EP 00 refers to the NLGI viscocity grade (EP=extreme pressure, the numbers refer to its relative viscocity, eg. EP 00, EP 0, EP 1, EP 2, etc. The higher the number the higher the viscocity)
An EP 00 is a very light semi-fluid grease. A lot of blenders will make some greases in that viscocity grade as it is specced in various types of machinery, eg,

I used JD corn head grease when rebuilding the Peerless transaxle in my John Deere lawn tractor 12 or so years ago; worked fine for many years

00 grease is usually referred to as Snapper grease in the mower repair business. Used in the old rear end Snapper chain cases. The peerless transaxles normally used either 80W90 or Bentonite grease.
