been there done that, best way is to
1. start out with a pick/shovel & trench spade to knock off as much clay dirt & rocks as you can. do this all the way around
2. toss the knocked off dirt & clay off into the bucket of the tractor & move it away dump & return until most of the easily to access dirt is off. (Keep the walking & working area clear of the majority of loose dirt as it is hard to work around & will make it better in long run.)
3. get out the ax & knock off the roots some all around the stump & repeat cleaning as you go of excess dirt prior to getting water out there.
4. power wash smaller sections where it can be cut off (large roots at the base say.) Work mostly on one side when doing this so it can be rolled easier in later steps.
5. get a 100 buck chain saw & a spare chain & go after the big exposed roots & top that you can get to hacking off all the chunks ya can. Sale prices are cheap now. look at a electric one as they can take some abuse & will have a better warranty ;) OR rent a DEMO (demolition saw)
6. repeat until you can roll it up on its side.
7. repeat the dirt removing process & keep going until you can move it out of the yard..

Other methods are a large drill and some kerosene after you knock off as much dirt as you can drill a bunch of medium sized holes about half way into the stump & let it soak into it. add some oil to the mix if ya have some old oil change left over. Getting the oil & kero down inside to wood it will burn for a very long time & help to dry the dirt out & fall off. the last stump I'm working on now is about 2/3 gone and still 4 feet around (sorry no pics :() When I started on this one the 5000 lb 4x4 tractor would barely budge it & the dirt was washed off as it was a flood deposit and didnt have any big roots or rocks left on it... 8)

It is not as much work as it sounds it is a couple hours of mediocre work a day for a few days. longer if you try & burn it in-place. once it is whittled down to size that chainsaw can go away return or rent a demo saw.

Hi folks.

Our time was up on the machine and I was left with this humongous tulip poplar stump sitting in the front yard.

One thing is sure, don't hire the guy who punched out at 5:00 and left it sitting in your front yard; that couldn't be an accident. I'm guessing if you call a few contractors in the area and tell them you're not in a hurry, they'd use it as a little filler job and toss it on the back of their dump truck. Not sure what disposal charges are like around there, might be cheaper to have them truck it to the back of your property and dump it with the others.

The hoe guy figures he'll make another day's work out of it, I'm thinking. Last guy I'd call after that performance..

Check with someone that operates a boom truck, they might be cheaper.

I believe you said it was by the street? Put a "FREE!" sign on it, and wait a few days. If it is still there, put a "FOR SALE: $1000", and it will be stolen by morning. . .

Thats a good one. Probably true. Ha!

Sounds like you have some experience with this. Makes alot of sense, similar to the 'eat an elephant one bite at a time' suggestion. Thanks Mark!

Demo Saw? Lowes? Home Depot rent these, or is this more of a United Rents sort of thing.

It def. seems that way doesn't it - this guy was a great & rare find actually. He was hurting for work and offered to ride herd on that JD310 for only $10/hr. (found him on Clist) And he could really drive that thing let me tell you. I was lucky to have him. He had a second job repo'ing cars that evening and stayed as late as he could. (I was not present when he left) When I returned I found everything done I had asked for except this stump. I really sincerely think he just ran out of time (besides, It was already 1 hour past 8 hrs on the machine - luckily Sunbelt Rentals waived the extra hour and didnt charge me for a whole day like they probably could have. (Thank you Sunbelt!). It was just bad luck and timing I think. Thank you all for your great suggestions!

Thats a good idea. I'll try that. Prolly run a clist ad, see what happens.

Spikers write up is about the best suggestion since you can't burn it. Chains are reasonably cheap. I save all of my chains that are down to their last few sharpenings for dirty logs or ones with nails. With that big of a saw you can do a lot of damage on the stump to get it into bite sized pieces. Keep the bar well oiled and it should not damage the bar.
Plus you want to do it in a timely fashion so that your Misses doesn't make life miserable for you.
