Engine seized???

Update:
Seems that something has seized internally - they pulled the hydraulic pump up front and still aren't getting anything to turn over. May need to be rebuilt or replaced as a result... Seems like the worst case scenario... Went from running fine to completely seized up. Really unfortunate☹️

Please keep us updated, even if it is a total rebuild as this really is an educational site.
Very good part vendors for our tractors here also.
Good luck.

Thank you - can you or anyone else on here give me an idea of what would be a reasonable cost for a rebuild / complete replacement? At this point I'm worried about shelling out more cash.

I'd have them pull the head before splitting and pulling the engine.

Hi all,
Jinma 284 owner!
Unfortunately I don't have a ton of knowledge of the history of this tractor, as I just purchased it a couple months ago. I also don't have a ton of mechanical knowledge or understanding, so bear that in mind as well. To start, the tractor was running fine upon purchase - though there was no air filter at all, and I'm concerned that might be contributing to what's now happening. I was gone for a month and upon return, I went to fire things up. The tractor turned over and emitted a good amount of black smoke, but didn't engage. I attempted to turn it over again and it struggled on the second try. Attempted again and it just made a "clunk" sound, which I assume is the starter hitting the flywheel and struggling to move it. I took the starter off and tested it in isolation. It ran fine. I tried to move the flywheel through the gap where the starter normally seats, and was unable to budge it with a crowbar in the teeth. The fan up front moves but won't move the timing belt. The generator fan moves but won't move the timing belt. The timing belt is seized up and I can't move it at all with all my strength. I've read about people using something to try to move the crankshaft but I'm not sure where people are tying onto that - all I can see is it connects up to the hydraulic pump up front, and can't see anywhere that I'd be able to get anything onto it for leverage.

Honestly, I don't understand how the engine seized up when it's been running as recently as a month ago. I pulled the oil dipstick and there's nothing out of the ordinary - no signs of water, etc. Two out of three glow plugs show resistance. Could the third one not firing up be enough to keep things from turning over? It was quite warm - in the 70s - when I made these attempts.

I had just purchased an air breather assembly and was about to install it, but now I can't even get the tractor to start, and I have no idea where to go from here.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Right off the bat, I would suspect you ingested something via the air intake...bird or bird nest, rat..... I like the idea of removing injectors and see if things move. If you had a borescope....Harbor Freight carries them for a great price.....stick it in the injector hole and have a look around.....checking for any fluid (water) accumulation. Also stick it in the ai intake and have a look around.

Get some help and push in the clutch while trying to turn the engine. Seems you have disconnected anything else that could be seized that would prevent the engine from turning over.

Carefully remove the drain plug and inspect the initial drippings/outflow from the crankcase checking for water exiting first. What condition is the oil that comes out?

Do that and check back to go from there based on results.

UPDATE:
Strangely, we've gotten it started up just fine, after a strange series of events. Long story short - I towed it to my regular mechanic, who pulled off the hydraulic pump off the front of the crankshaft and attempted to turn it over by hand on the front crank. No luck. Not sure of what other, if any, attempts he made to get things started (they've been swamped with work right now). So, I had the original seller pick it up and have a look at it to see what he thought. He couldn't really make sense of why it would be locked up so wanted to get his hands on it.

He pulled the starter and apparently was able to crank on it on the flywheel to get it to turn. Claimed that the battery was toasted (not my experience) and guessed it wasn't getting enough juice to the starter. Put power onto the battery and got everything started just fine.

In the end, I don't really have any answers - other than it's running now, thankfully!

I think I'm going to get ahold of a new starter, because even when looking it over upon purchase it sounded weak upon start.

Thanks y'all for your assistance with this!

I saw some boys here had a Ford pinto locked engine. Finally put a 3' pipe wrench on crank and an 8' pipe over the handle. Ran a chain from end of pipe to a truck bumper and took off. Drove that car around here for years after that.
