? engine oil for 1500D?

What is an appropriate engine oil for the 1500D engine? One person suggested 15W40 Chevron Delo. To what standard do we need to match? I think the current is the star symbol. If it's appropriate for automotive diesel applications, is it appropriate for our tractors?

We use Texaco 15-40W in all of our tractors. It really depends a lot on what climate you live in. The colder it is, the lighter the oil should be. What I always recommend is that you ask a local dealer what they put in their tractors. If it is ok for automotive diesel engines, it will be ok for your tractor.

I did a little quick research and figured that Shell Rotella, Chevron Delo 400 or Penzoil long life would all be suitable. I found the Penzoil locally and went with it. 3 quarts of 15 W 50 went into my 1500D. It also received a Fram oil filter #3593 which has me a little concerned. While the Fram physically matches up, I don't think there is a pressure bypass in it. The Yanmar filter that came off was very heavy and looked like it had some kind of heavy spring bypass in it.
