I would go stand on the porch.

I've read some military white papers about EMP testing and possible damage, it's a nothing burger.

I was sitting in my deer stand out back yesterday thinking (I do a lot of thinking up there) about the concept of neighbors banding together to survive should the stuff hit the fan. I ran through a short list of immediate neighbors and realized at least half would be a liability. Based only on what I see, one or two of the women would be primarily concerned with extending the life of their manicures for as long as possible. Taking out the garbage is a chore outside of their pay grade. They would have to go it alone. Although there is a young lady living across the road who can stack more hay in an hour than most people regardless of gender, including me. She'd stay.

A couple of folks don't seem able to function without a drink or some other form of medication. While under present day circumstances I really do enjoy their company, they wouldn't be welcome on the day the sky falls. Fortunately, there are a few who appear to have the skills, resources, and intestinal fortitude to survive during dire situations. My wife being at the top of that list.

In total, about half would stay while I'd vote the other half off the island. Unfortunately, some households include members of both camps. That could get ugly.

Problem is, it NOT just ONE person. Then it's their spouse, kids, extended family, grampas, grandmas, aunts and uncles, their friends and all that again.

I can't even stand the thought of the mayhem at some peoples homes around holidays. Get more then two people in one spot and the dysfunctional communication (NOISE) already starts.

Unless all these people had NAVY SEAL survival training, I can guarantee, they would ALL be a liability.

I've told this story before, but here goes again.

The fall before Y2K, I was finishing my garden harvest and offered the neighbor some produce. He said something like, "Shouldn't you be keeping that for Y2K?" and laughed. I replied, "Nah, I just have to keep you fat and happy." and walked away.

Where is the exodus to for guys in Michigan?

Well, if you just happen to be in Florida when all this stuff hits the fan, you are welcome to drop by my place. I could use a few people like you and Oversz with a little sense around the place! Might have to send up smoke signals to get my attention but y'all would be welcome here.
My thoughts are if the man starts coming door to door collecting firearms, there are going to be some people that are going to shoot first and ask questions later. The projected number of people collecting guns will go down as the number of guns collected goes up. The body count on both sides will be terrible, but I think just by sheer numbers the common people will win out. What does the government have to gain if they kill all their subjects, or even a good portion of them? True they will have everything available to them that they want, if it is available, but the problem is, without the masses, the resupply of food, and other required items will not be produced, so they will also have to resort to living off the land, something that most of our officials pay someone to do for them, and since the almighty dollar will be worthless, the power of the sword is what will rule.
If the stuff really hits the fan, and I am looking for a place to shelter myself from a storm or need food to survive, then someone having a deed to a house or food, and me having a gun isn't going to work out well for them. I am not a violent person, don't take things that don't belong to me, but in the case of complete mayhem, survival is going to be the required rule, and the only way to survive is to outlive those that want to take what you have. Food kept in refridges, without a sustained grid, is going to be hard to keep. Generators require fuel, which can be grown (peanut oil) to run them, but how many people have reserves to hold them long enough to grow a new crop? People will resort to killing off of livestock and wild animals to live, which will rapidly reduce the amount of food available, so scarcity will come into play. The best hunters will find food, but a well armed person can stalk them and take their plunder with a single shot from a gun. A well prepared person will have a good sword and a gun.
