I recently purchased a YM2310 - soon after the starter solenoid went out. I replaced the solenoid.
When I reinstalled the starter and solenoid - the tractor fired right up and ran for about 15 seconds and would not turn back over (just clicks). I then took the starter in and had it checked (under a load) - the starter is good. Put the starter back on - fires right up and ran for about 15 seconds and died would not turn back over (just clicks).... Tries to start and then just clicks...
Any suggestions.....

This is an awesome tractor - just want to get it running!!!!

sounds like a weak battery. try charging the battery or bring it to auto parts store and let them test the battery. winter is when dying lead-acid batteries bite the bullet, also deep cycling lead acid batteries is not good. deep cycling is draining the battery below 90 percent of charge then recharging, most automotive batteries only survive deep cycling 3 too 6 times with a result of 70 percent loss in battery performance.

edit: Optima Yellow or Blue Top batteries are the best for deep cycle performance, "Optima’s Yellow Top has been verified in Life Cycle testing to withstand up to 350 complete discharges!". not really needed for a starting battery, just an example.

Battery is good... Tested good and have also used a different battery....

Just don't make sense - starts first hit after sitting for a spell - runs for 15 seconds - then dies... Won't turn over....

a possible cause of the engine stalling would be 'vapor lock'. easy to fix, just bleed the fuel system of all air bubbles. this must be done after changing the fuel filter or if you ran out of fuel.

as for electrical, make sure the negative battery connections are clean and tight, same with all positive connections. a loose or corroded connection will drive you nuts.

try jumping the two large lugs on the solenoid when you only get clicks to see if she will turn over. the new solenoid could be faulty.

the worst problem I have had was running out of fuel way in the back, lugging fuel and tools. more suggestions will follow from other members.

Good Luck

edit: darn forgot to mention, make sure there is no water in the fuel system. especially if tractor is stored outside.

Does your 2310 have compression release and are you using it? Before starter problem began was tractor continuing to run after cranking?

I am using the compression release. Before the starter solenoid problem - the tractor was starting and running great. But, I only had the tractor a few weeks before the solenoid went out - so I did not use it much at all. It has been sitting for several months - was just too darn cold to mess with it - warming up out so want to get this little tractor running....

Sounds like a bad battery connection/ground connection to tractor frame, poor terminal connection at battery, or bad battery connection at solenoid.
A little trick I learned years ago when servicing vehicle electrics, before one panics, turn the lights on the "vehicle" are they bright??? Get someone to stand in front and observed the lights, turn the key to start, do the lights go dim and out??? If you know the battery is fully charged, check all battery leads for loose of bad connection, battery posts, battery negative ground connection, soleniod battery connections. GOT to be one of them.

I agree with Rhett, try jumping your starter next time it does this. You might change your fuel filter if you haven't already.

How do you know your solenoid went out? It sounds as if your engine is seizing, as I don't think there is anything electrical on your tractor to cause the engine to stop running. The only possibilities could be the starter staying engaged and seizing, (would destroy the starter), or a fuel shutoff solenoid failing. (which I don't think you have).

I have a hard time envisioning an engine seizing after running 15 seconds. But starts right up after sitting a bit.

Tractor is up and running and purring like a kitten....

Installed new battery cables, ground cable was weak....

Thank you ALL for your help... I am new to the Yanmar tractors and I am sure I will be needing more help in the future... Again, thanks all....

That still doesn't account for it stalling out I would Check your Fuel, Fuel Filter, and Air Filter and see if they made need to be replaced.;)

Now that I have it running... and can get it into the barn (with heat) and check it over... Figured it would be best to completely service and go over the tractor before using it too much... Just initially parked it in a bad spot - bad light and no heat...lol

I don't understand the stalling either... but hasn't stalled since I replaced the battery cables and fires right up?? Who knows - maybe it was several things and I just happened to hit a few in the dark...

So this is a late tag into this thread but I wanted to add another example as to why I think you are a great bunch of guys at this forum. I moved my 2500 out of the barn while I was waiting on 8 ton of reclaimed milled asphalt to be delivered. Set the brake, turned off the engine while the asphalt was being dumped. After the delivery man left, I went to start the baby and all I heard was clicking of the starter. Pulled out the booster/charger and was getting all types of flaky results. There were no positive indications on the meters. Swapped out batteries, same results. Tried jumping the starter, same results. Every time I turned the key I would get a partial click and then all the meters would indicate a dead uncharged battery.

Ended up getting the boys to help me push into the barn while my wife sat left seat and steered into the barn (luckily it wasnt far, but I wanted to get it inside before it stormed. Cant have baby get wet unless I am scrubbing her with a loofah(yes, the tractor)). After the boys and I warmed up our shovels, I tried to start the tractor again, got beyond the normal clicking, but it didnt turn over enough to get started. Next try I was back to a single click and then what seemed like a completely dead battery. Needless to say I gave up for the night, came inside to the computer and fired up this forum. Did a search, and within minutes had read four discussion threads that were describing baby's symptoms.

The next day I went to the nearest Autozone and dropped $19 on new battery cables. Cleaned all the connections, put on the new cables and baby started right up. Went outside and spread the remaining 5 tons of asphalt. The only problem was how difficult it was to see the ground with the big smile on my face. You guys are the greatest!
