Electric Post Hole Digger

I built a 24v electric post hole digger to go with my electric yard tractor - lets me easily drill holes for tree and pumpkin planting, without going through the hassel of mounting my 3 point PHD on the (real) tractor.

It was pretty simple to build, since I just tap the power off of the yard tractor - I used a 12/24v bison gear motor, 10amp, 120rpm, from surplus center. Made some fitings, welded together, added a pillow block bearing, 6" auger, wiring and switch, and it works great - drilled 100 pumpkin patch holes over the weekend.......

How deep are you putting them pumpkin seeds, or are you planting whole pumpkins Ah yes Necessity is the mother of invention Cool Idea!

not so much the pumpkin seeds, but making pumpkin mounds- last year a guy down the road put in a pumpkin patch and ended up with nothing but dead pumpkins...too much clay, not enough soil.. so this years experiment for us is to drill a (short) post hole, fill with compost, ending up with a nice little pumpkin mound... a drip system to keep it wet, and hopefully we'll have a nice patch...

and yes, you do need to keep an eye on the cord, reminds me of the electric lawnmower I used as a kid, I think it ate a few cords when I wasn't paying attention.

On this project, the cord is a piece of the neighbors christmas lights extension cord.. he ran it along his fenceline and the cows ate a few holes in it, worked out good for me.....

Gosh, surely Black and Decker sells a LI battery powered posthole digger? The Roomba people will soon come out with a robotic one, that even automatically decides where to dig the holes too. ;-)
