firstly, adjust the oiler to maximum flow, oil is cheap chains and bars and sprockets soon add up. then once you fire up the saw rev the engine with the chain a few inches of a block of wood or piece of card board or newspaper page or some other surface so as you can see oil droplets flicking of the tip of the chain, when this happens your chain is being lubed and ready to cut, it it isn’t investigate why. of course be aware of kickback.

contrary to popular misconception chains dont stitch, they do wear however by the pin bushes elongating. having said that i haven’t ever had a chain wear out faster than the cutters.
always back the chain off after completion of work, when the chain is working it will warm up expanding it, then when it cools down it can contract, this is why you generally need to nip up the chain a little bit once you start working., the consequence of this can bind up the chain or worse still crack the crankcase housing.
