Interesting... You would not be able to take a picture would you?

Now that I think about it, I seem to recall I did not have this problem the first couple times I used the saw, only AFTER I changed the chain the first (and every time after that?) ?

As I see it there really are only 2 options, #1 - I did something wrong an #2 - Something is wrong/broke... Odds favor #1 regretfully...

Be well,
David

Double check the gauge of the chain. Sounds like it is narrower than the bar giving too much side play.

Yeah, make sure the chain is correct in gauge and pitch.

Also take a look at your drive sprocket to make sure it doesn't have grooves in it. They can make it impossible to tension the chain. And make sure the tip sprocket rotates OK.

My CS-400 has given years of good service, but I used it a couple days ago and could not get the chain to stay tensioned. The drive sprocket is shot. Have a new one on order.

It is brand a brand new saw.... I bought it just before I ought yours (which runs flawlessly BTW).

I did not see it mentioned, you may have been doing it and it may make no difference, but I was taught to lift the bar tip to force the bar tip up as I tighten the chain. Step 3 How To Tighten a Chainsaw Chain - All

Just found this thread. I've got a CS-400 also. Every time I've thrown a chain it's been in a pinched bar situation. (Trying to unstick bar and very few times). But I did have trouble keeping the chain tight right out of the box. That stopped when I flipped the bar over. Don't know why. But I also tighten the chain till it picks the tip up. Just make sure the chain is still free. Tighten front nut first to hold everything in place.

Yea proper adjustment is necessary to good performance...

The Echo CS400 operator manual outlines the correct procedure for that model saw.

Excellent advice. I promise I will try these things.

Saturday I only ran the Stihl 261 because it is flawless....

But I will try these things I want this saw for limbing and smaller jobs...

I had the same problem. I filed the drive links, where they were dinged, until they were smooth. But after that, I always had occasional trouble with that chain popping off. I eventually replaced that chain, and dressed the bar. But in your situation, I'd likely replace the bar also. I can't imagine you'd need more than that, on an otherwise new saw.

David, were you in the Army and the Navy?

Yes indeed, I am one of THOSE crazy guys... I served on Submarines in the USN when Reagan was CIC, and then again I was a SGT in Army National Guard with W as my CIC... LOL...

Be well,
David
