What program do I need to open a file with a DXF extension file? (plans.dxf)

That's autocad's interchange format. Lot's of programs can load and view then, and a number can edit them too. A good drawing package like Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop will work. Perhaps corel draw too. Visio maybe?

I found a handy little site to found out what programs open which file extensions. You need Autocad to open DXF files.

I downloaded that Volo program.

Turns out that the bed plans I downloaded
sucked! What good are plans that show the pieces
but don't give dimensions?
Any way, any one got a good site that has plans
for a bed? I'll be using some white ash that was cut from the wood lot. It's from my son who's three now.

<A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.rockler.com/ecom7/findprod.cfm?&DID=6&sku=5013>Rockler</A> has some bed plans in their catalog. The one I linked is for two twin beds that convert to bunk or loft/twin beds. You could build one now - and be prepared for the future! I've never ordered plans from them, but everything else I've ordered in the past has been top-notch and "as-advertised".

The dimensions may have been on another layer that is turned "off". If you could have someone with ACAD look at the drawing, they could tell you.

ACAD has different layers that make it handy to have drawings that you can select only those parts you want to see.

Also, if the dimensions are missing, it wouldn't be difficult to add them in ACAD if the drawing file were opened in ACAD rather than the viewing-only program........................chim

Very true, Chim...but then you're looking at spending money. AutoCAD goes for a few thousand bucks now.

Of course, you can get AutoCAD Lite for less then a thou....or try eBay for an older version. There is also IntelliCAD which open .dwg and .dxf files.

DeltaCad will open and work dxf files. It is a simple but very good AutoCad style program. My Plasma Cam cutter will cut off of dxf files directly so I use these a lot. It is a 39.95 program also a 30 day free trial <A target="_blank" HREF=http://deltacad.com/>http://deltacad.com/</A>

The October issue of Wood magazine has an article on "kid-friendly beds". You can build them as bunks or twins. There is also an article on a matching dresser. The articles include plans, material lists and detailed instructions. I just got my copy in the mail this week - I'm not sure if it is on the stands or not.
