Teach,

My bucket probably falls into Bob's lightweight category too but has held up pretty well. (I'd tell you the brand but Bob would yell at me for introducing a brand that wasn't part of the original discussion /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif) There are some reinforcing strips on the bucket but I don't know if they are the type Bob was referring to as making it a medium duty bucket.

I haven't see very many posts about people destroying their buckets on TBN. Also, if one part of the tractor has to wear out or break, let it be the bucket. I'd rather the bucket itself twist out of shape than have the bucket be stronger than the FEL arms or mounts. Replacement buckets are not that expensive (hundreds not thousands). Besides, if you busted your OEM bucket you might be able to talk the Mrs. into a 4 in 1 as a replacement. Hows that for making the best of a bad situation? /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Island,
Just a few weeks back, Bob introduced his Rural King tractor photo's into a thread, which had nothing to do with Rural King tractors in the original part of the thread. So, I wouldn't take Bob to seriously. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Dave -- I asked the Mahindra guy about the alloy used, whether or not it was one of the newer high strength steels or not, and he said he didn't really know. He did know the tractors he has out were using the buckets with no problems.

I'm aware of the newer alloys and tempering processes that give steels properties that were only available with really heavy stuff a few years ago. Car bodies are a great example. There are many different alloys and ways to work the steel that impact it's characteristics, such as hydroforming frame rails on pickups to give a frame that is both stronger and lighter than the old way.

I'm glad to know for sure that it is a high strength alloy in the buckets. That's actually a smarter way to build them, given the importance of weight. I noticed the cutting edge was made of heavier stuff, but that is probably because of the wear characteristics needed rather than outright strength.
