I have a dumb question - What is a twitch? /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

/ Dumbest tractor uses? #22
To twitch is to drag a load of logs out on the end of a cable or chain or rope. A twitch is the load of loads. From the days of horse logging I believe.

A twitch can also be used to controll an unruly horse.

Or, as my wife is fond of saying, an unruly husband! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I had a 8N with a loader (rather a manure bucket). I also had this tall rotted Apple stump. It was very punky. When I pushed it with the bucket it would lean pretty well. So I backed up and then rammed into it. The bucket was about 30" off the ground. I sheared the top of the stump and proceeded to push my radiator into the fan. My wife and mother-in-law just happened to be there wondering what **** I was doing while all the steam was coming out of the front of the tractor.

Years ago I helped my brother remove a Black Walnut. Had it topped with about a 6ft tall stump. He wanted it cut below ground level. Got it mostly cut before all the dirt finished the chain. Seemed logical to push on the top with the bucket that was on the -borrowed- 9N. Could rock it but wouln't go. He backed off and gave it a good shot. Bucket rides up the stump and back down. Stump is now standing neatly between the bucket and the bashed in tinwork in front of the radiator. One shocked looking tractor driver. More whittling with a rocked out chain finall got the tractor freed up. No damage to the radiator fortunately.

OK, reading these old posts and I have one to add...

I was bush hogging with an old ford loader that had a leak in the hydraulics so the loader would slowly drop, meaning you had to mow with it up.... Stupid act in it's own...

I was coming around a turn and looking back to make sure the bush hog was cleaning a tree when I hear a loud CRACK CRACK CRACK in front of me, I turned to look just in time to catch a tree branch in the face that had been bowed back by the loader and finally cleared it...

I woke up 2 hours later. I had cleared the bush hog by being swatted out of my seat by the branch. The tractor had continued on about 20 feet and stalled out on a tree, and my cap was still sitting in the seat!

How I didn't break my face I'll never know, but I was black and blue for some time.

Well I remember way back in the day when my father was using a rented bobcat to move some boulders that were substantially larger than what the machine was intended to move (it was substantially larger than the machine itself if I remember correctly). Well he finally got the rock to the edge of the yard and decided to give it one last heave into the woods and the next thing i see is the greasy side of thebobcat standing completely perpendicular to the ground. Fortuneately, his bucket was still under the rock so he just lowered it back down which set the rear end back on all 4s.

I didnt know this but when working on hilly terrain with a skid-steer you should always run with your back end towards the top of the hill when you arent loaded. ie If you are moving dirt down a hill you must back back up the hill when returning.

I know it's not funny, but ****, that was good.
I have been hit in the face by smaller diameter branches, no injuries though.

I've had my tractor for a month or so, so I haven't had a chance to do anything really dumb yet. But I'll tell you the smartest thing I've done - started reading the forums on this website.

Hey DanielVT,

I agree! I've managed to learn:
To hit the house with my rear blade. I was in the process of pulling our cars out of the snow (both stuck in driveway) and watching the FEL .. making sure to avoid hitting cars... I dident even feel the house.. but I knew something was very wrong just by the expression on my Wife's face.

Hit a borrowed trailer's fenders with my front grill guard (both fenders of borrowed trailer.. gads??) when loading re-claimed asphalt for road. Learned that if you want to try to get the bucket dump over to one side ... load FROM THAT SIDE!

Snag the shelter logic "tent" sides twice with rear blade (dang that thing is wide!). I've learned that if I back in the shelter in LOW range I do much better.

Put giant ruts into the front yard when trying to push a stump out. In the process I broke the 'in ground' wire for the dog fence. <2 places> .. came home next day with message from our nice neighbor that he had seen our dog roaming the neighborhood. I learned that if there is a culvert up slope with running watter in it... it's probably quite SOFT down slope from it.

Hopefully I will not have to post anything more in ths thread!!

Carry on,
Phill

Yea - I've hit the deck on both of my houses with my backhoe, but didn't knock either down - thank gawd. I make an effort not to operate my machine anywhere close to the house - at least I try. My now-deceased tent enclosure got mangled at least 5 times courtesy of my FEL. It got it's revenge when it collapsed during a snow storm - man, what it a PITA to get my tractor out of that thing. My shed, has really taken more than it's share of abuse. I've clipped the siding a dozen times. I sheared off a corner of the roof with my FEL - had it nice and high to make it past...got distracted and *almost* made it. I also snagged the corner of the same shed with my equipment trailer and literally tore the entire front wall off of the building. THAT was one of the funniest things I have ever seen - and yes, it was all about the expression on my wife's face.

I've broken a few fence wires trying to disk too close, and banged the end of the barn with a blade, putting a nice little gash in the metal
I've also hit the end of the tractor shelter a couple of times by forgetting the disk is wider than the tractor

1/4 mile drive...the dogs and me take the tractor down to pick up the mail...just more convenient than getting in the truck, plus the dogs get a little exercise.

Somehow the rear bumper of my pick-up has two matching dents, one on each side, that BOTH match the outrigger feet on my hoe.

Lets see........Hit the top of the door way on my nieghbors cedar shed. Forgot about the ROPS and BOOM. Hit the wifes 4runner with the FEL bucket while plowing snow. Almost tipped over my 4wheeler when I was making a turn and the 4wheeler took a swipe from the loader and it ended up on 2 wheels. I've hit numerous trees, rubbing the bark off of them.
