hehe... i could use some ricin ... there are a few people id like to send some to. I also know some sick looking vegans an some healthy looking bacon eating meat freaks. Genetics do have alot to do with the equation. My dad ate super healthy most of his life, never smoked and seldom had a drink of alcohol (His limited diet due to celiac disease issues), but only lived into late 60's while my chain smoking and hard drinking mother in law outlived him.

IMHO.. vegan is a hard diet to follow, and be healthy, unless you are full into it and do some investigation.

last november I had a heart problem creep up on me. I went almost 95% veg.. had to locate god alternate sources of protien.. no more fired.. no refined sugar or flour.. only whole grains, no white foods.. no dairy with fat in it.. I opted for non fat cheese, slices, shreded, cream and cottage and yogert and milk, vs the vegan soy/veg cheeses, due to them still having a decent fat content.

in the end I went with a 80% veg diet with lean beef, chicken (white ) or turkey.. only baked, grilled or roasted, no marbled meats.. no ground meat other than 97% or better turkey,, no fried, and no more pork.

i eat veg protien hotdogs, peperoni and bacon.. works fine for me.. i use egg whites.. etc...

health turned right around and saved me from an early grave in just a few months.. that and a good exercise routine... life changes..e tc.

ps.. took me months to get all that dietary stuff figured out.. but I got it under control now. I know what I can and can't eat when out, and how to ask for it prepaired to be healthy for me.. etc..

cn't imagine there are any 'healthy' benefits to 'fried' food. Just not seeing it.

So how do you cook okra?

theoretical myths huh? yeah.. that's what it is. never mind all the medical science and the proof walking around.. or rolliong around in the lil scooters to back any of it up.

Do you remember when margarine was health food? Then they discovered butter is better for you. They used to claim low fat diets reduced your risk of cancer, then found out it actually increases your risk of cancer.

6 Risks of Eating a Low-Fat Diet

The health food thing is just another fruitcake religion. Eat a varied diet with moderate exercise.

everything in moderation right? how about a moderate level of ricin? maybee not huh?

soundguy

Maybe you should cut that with diesel.

I cook okra by stewing them with tomatoes.

margerine has never been health food as far as I'm concerned. all them hydrogenated oils.

Please don't generalize. the article you link to mirrors national health recomendations on fat. IE.. about 50-60 grams per day for the average healthy person eating a 2k callorie diet. That's not a no fat diet.. that's a healthy level of fat.

as for the article.. i hardly feel a sparkpeople blog carries much weight as a scientific publication.. is it cited by the AMA???

eating healthy is not a fruitcake religion. saying so casts doubt on your comments.

Eat healthy, and exercise, .

that's not pounding down fried food, butter by the stick and ho-ho-s and twinkies, then thinking you can go jog around the block and be fine.

check out the cancer risk of fried foods depending on the oil used.

again.. I can't see any health 'BENEFITS' of a fried food vs another cooking method like baked or broiled / grilled.. Take something good like a piece of fish and fry it or bake it... ones better for you.. and it's the one that doesn't have 'deep' in it's preperation name.

Off topic sorry but...Talking about Okra we plant a bunch every year and my wife makes Okra pie some southerners will be aware of a version of that dish if you dont like slimy Okra this will change your mind out eating Okra!

She makes it with a real thin seasoned flour batter with h2o and puts sliced okra, jalapenos, onions, sausage (left over or freshly cooked) and fry's it real thin in a pan with EVOO until its crispy and can be lifted out with a spatula and cut into chunks to serve its pretty darn tasty everybody raves about it!

(I am sure it surpasses the daily fatty foods intake requirements maybe even a years worth but its good eats.)

reminds me partially of tomator pie... tomatoes cooked into a paste.. or using paste, then thin crust and bakes.. have seen people put boiled, sliced okra in it as well, or a liner or rice, or servinf with rice... onions too.. carmelized.. etc..

I tried the crisco thing this weekend in my popcorn maker instead of corn oil. The popcorn was good. I don't know if it was a lot better, but the kids said they liked it. Of course I still use a stick of butter for each batch of popcorn.

What I did notice more than the flavor was that the popcorn popped bigger. I usually fill up the popcorn maker with 3/4 cup of kernels. This time the popcorn popped so big it lifted the lid off the base slightly.

did you use the butter flavored shortening?

Soundguy, I tried the 93% lean ground turkey and one day I found 93% lean ground beef at Walmart...so I sauteed both the low fat turnkey and low fat ground beef at the same time in different frying pans using only a tsp of EVOL in each pan...when they were finished there was grease in the turkey skillet and none in the ground beef skillet...it was dry as a bone...So I gave up the lean turkey ..

i have found 99% lean turkey at walmart and publix, and 97/3 beef at walmart.

both seem to cook up pretty dry for me.. however.. I almost never do ground turkey anymore, and grnd beef even less.

No, I eat turnkey at Thanksgiving , the fat too...LOL...It is just that is one day of the year...the rest of the time I do as I always have and try not to eat fatty and greasy foods...So when all the hoop la started over ground turkey and chicken being leaner and healthier than ground beef I decided to test it for myself...and Like I said I found a pkg. of each turkey and beef ..ground and both 93% lean...the turkey had grease in the pan the hamburger did not...so I was convinced and I do not like ground turkey for taste and safety compared to ground beef.

If both were ground to 93% lean and the Turkey had grease left in the pan, that tells me you had more fat left in the beef and less fat left in the turkey. In other words, the fat from the turkey went in to the pan. The fat from the beef went into your body.
