I'd like to get a driveway alarm. We have two long driveways on our farm, and sometimes we don't hear someone driving up. Sometimes our dogs don't even hear them. I think Harbor Freight has a wireless driveway alarm. Does anyone have one, or does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks!!!

I have one called the reporter. Got it at Northern I think. It worked good for a couple of years and then it just gave it up. I don't think I would buy this one again. It worked off of heat detection more than motion. If I were to buy another one I would try a different brand.

I believe there are already some threads on this subject.

Did you use the search feature?

I've had a Reporter for several years now, and it's still going strong. The batteries in the remote unit last almost a year. You can set it to be more or less sensitive and to scan 15 ft or 30 ft. One possible downside is it picks up animals and people on foot, but I want that anyway, so it's great. I see they're called "Chamberlain" now instead of Reporter. I just bought a second remote unit to also report on a path from the river as well as my driveway.

Also have the Optex model rc-10u for 5-6 years now and works great.

Miltronics Driveway Alert. Range is 1000+ feet. Options for 2000+ feet. Very reliable. Mine's been out there for 10+ years. My dogs light up on it and that seems to be the end of any problems. Woof, woof, woof !

I see they have exactly the same model for sale now as they did when I first got it. That tells me its a well designed unit.

We have 4 of the DAKOTA ALERTs transmitters feeding 2 recievers. One in the house and the other in the barn which is 100 yards from the house. We have basically 2 entrances to our property. One is an access road/easement, with a locked cable across it, for neighbors to get to the backside of thier property and the other entrance is on the 1/2 mile road with electric gate that we actually use. We use 2 transmitters spread out a bit for each entrance. If both go off we KNOW we have visitors. If one goes off it is probably a critter and NO problem.
Range is through woods and over a hill with probably close to the 900 foot range. It sure is nice being down at the barn and KNOWING that somebody is "visiting". At 2 AM it is especially nice to know that one has time to get out the Garrand or the 12 ga. to give them a proper welcome................Anyway, get SOMETHING, it's peace of mind....God bless......Dennis

How about the simple air hose and bell set-up used at the older gas stations?

i will say stay away from any driveway alarm that does not use a ground sensor. the wind, shaddows, clouds etc...will set it off. you will end up not using it.

We also use the Dakota Alert and it is a real nice setup. We have had one ever since they came out with no problems until one of our inbound 18 wheelers ran over our first one. Years ago, we used the driveway alert bell that you used to see at gas filling stations. They are low tech and are very dependable, however are only good as far as you can run the activator hose. We have the Dakota with the infra red sensor. It's a great product but I wish there was a little more adjustability on the sensitivity. I have ours hooked up to the the outside lights via X10 and certain lights come on outside as well as the audible alarm. When somebody comes into the yard at night they know that we know.
