So yesterday I split the driveshaft on my fertilizer spreader. I thought I live in the middle of farm country, an easy find, it wasn’t. The local farm store didn’t carry them, the Kubota and John Deere dealer didn‘t either. The Kubota dealer at least said they could order one. Of course I put 80 pounds of fertilizer in it. I got on line and checked all the TSC stores within a 1 1/2 hour drive, none in stock. I ordered from Amazon, should be in tomorrow.

I had cut the driveshaft for a Kubota BX and it was now too short if I lowered the spreader too far. I suspect I lowered it too far and it started to come apart and when I raised it that’s when it split. Is this something places just don’t stock? A couple of pictures of it.

Beings I have driveshafts that are well over 50 years old, no, I don't think they would stock them.

Yeah, you'd think Farm & Fleet, TSC or Fleet Farm would be able to hook you up... A torch, and hammer and a welder would get you by for awhile, but not for long if it's too short...

Part of the problem is you can’t see what is going on with the safety guard on. I took it off and it’s to short by about 5 inches. It’s pretty obvious with the guard off that it was barely staying engaged.

Did you have the Pat’s hitches on your old tractor? Depending on the geometry, those may of made the difference.

Around here several places carry them, complete and all the parts to build one.
Farm equipment dealers and larger repair shops.

I have spares. If I need anything I have to order it. But would certainly loan a neighbor a PTO shaft if they were in need…

There's a local machine shop here that keeps some shafts in stock, but there are so many variations that he has to order many of them.

When that guy finally retires, I don't know of anyone else locally that actually repairs them.

IIRC, they need 1/3 of the shaft length engagement. Many users don't pay attention to that... I don't understand the reason for the weird shaft shapes. They seem DESIGNED to waller out and fail.

I got the new one today and got it cut to the right length. It took me three try’s to cut it short enough. I didn’t want to get it to short. The new one is very similar to the old one, same manufacturer I bet but is much heavier duty. Larger u joints and heavier and larger shaft. It barely fits in there but I got it.

Know our driveline specialty shop carries all types of ag shafts, u-joint and couplers. That’s where the tractor shops send their work.
