4WD = four wheel drive.... pretty self-explanitory.

MFWD = mechanical front wheel drive... specifies the type of drive the front wheels have. Some 4WD tractors use hydraulic front wheel assist, and others use mechanical front wheel drive.

On my Case 4210 they refer to it as (MFD) Mechanical Front Drive. I don't see any difference in 4 WD or MFD....I think it's more a difference in terminology used by the manufactures. What ever they call I think MFD or 4 WD is GREAT.

Both terms are freely floated around. Technically in terms of market reporting a true 4wd tractor would be an articulated 4wd tractor (the big boys). Mfwd tractors would be classified as a 2 wheel drive tractor w/ mech front wheel drive. The older hyd driven units would also be a 2wd tractor w/ pfwd (power front wheel drive).
