As for the guy cleaning the motorcycle chain.. well. I am sorry that happened to him too,. I don't know what else to say. There really isn't much to say.

As I child I saw my dad saw 1/4 inch of of his thumb more than once (both thumbs). Wasnt pretty.

Last year I was driving a deck screw and the bit slipped off and hit my thumb. I could tell it wasn't good when I pulled the bit out of the hole in my glove and it was red. It hit the base of my thumbnail and tore half of the back of my nail root out. It seemed to take a long time but the nail grew back just fine.

There are those times when I'm all for self administered surgery. I have drilled a thumbnail or fingernail. I have sewn up my own cuts too. I guess I've known too many doctors.

The worst thing a drill motor has done to me is catch the chuck in my Willie Nelson style braids and wind them into my ZZ Top style beard and beyond that into my chin with the force of a solid right hook. I now have short hair and a trimmed beard.

I guess that left a mark!! I was showing a friend of mine how to do some roofing. I had a hammer with a serrated face. 1st GD nail, I missed & very cleanly removed my thumbnail. I went in the house to get a bandaid, and his wife yelled at me for bleeding on her kitchen floor. Some days just don't get better.......

Sorry to read about your drilling pinky. I just had to put a seam-ripper thru my thumb nail to let the blood out and start the healing?I have used a tiny bit to do it before, but did not trust myself this time.Used BH's new ripper and twisted it right on in, without pain?

BTW, since you "did it", did you at least use a backer board or tape to keep it from splintering out the back? Nice clean hole is something to brag about!!


When I was young (18) and always in a hurry. I was exiting a 4' scaffolding on a construction job, as I was airborne, I looked down and saw that someone had put form boards, nails intact, at the end. Yes I landed trying to "miss" and ended up with a 16d nail in my heel, hit the bone and slide up till it was buried. I slowed down after that.....

a new years eve or 2 ago I put a self tapper sheetmetal screw thru my palm with a screwgun while trying to put up a small parking garage structure.

long screw tightened my hand right up.. fun part was backing it out.

hand swelled good.. some antibiotics.. and then for the next couple months metal came tot he surface.

I have never had a really serious accident with power tools, and they say if you use them a lot, sooner or later the law of averages will catch up with you. Since I did carpentry work for 35 years, and have been an avid do-it-yourselfer for 40 years, the odds are REALLY stacked against me by now.

I've kept my accident average up over the years. No really serious ones. I should be okay. I laid a good sized tree right where I wanted it to go today and no branches fell on me, so that might not bode well for the future.

my dr is constantly mad at me.

except for a bout of heart problems over the last couple years, the previous 10 ys i've only really been to the dr for farm injuries.. lots of holes poked in me.. things sticking out of me.. antibiotics.. animal foot prints on my body.. xrays..
