Great info thanks guys.. This sure shows me what I need to do, now to find out what rental cost will be...

Just checked, can get a case 580 2 wheel drive for $190 a day or 4wd for $210.. Plus $100 to deliver and pickup..

For the extra money, I'd rent the 4wd unit. You will find that filling your bucket will go much, much easier with the extra traction. You'll use more fuel, but those 4 cylinder engines are not that bad on fuel anyway and I doubt you'll use a full tank doing what you said you'll be doing. If so, it's still not that great an expense considering how much faster and easier you'll be able to load the bucket.

Jim looking at your pictures reminds me of watching a trackhoe, large Cat, digging pits for telco manholes, combination clay and limestone, Plano Texas.

He dug two parallel trenches and then cleaned out everything in between. He explained to me that if you started just digging a big hole the sides will naturally taper in at the bottom. But digging your sides first guarantees straight sides. Made sense to me and I've used that concept more than once since. BTW, that Cat was the smoothest thing I've every operated. It's quieter and a lot more powerful than any backhoe I've ever danced with.
