On a wildlife doco, baby elephants were eating adult elephant dung. This was to introduce the bacteria that breaks down plant matter in their gut.

It's hard to swipe a cow's cud, but I have done it a few times so I could feed it to a different cow. Sometimes bacteriological warfare is the best offense in health related issues.

This concept also has other applications; I recently read an article on persistent ear infections, the case in point was someone who had a stubborn ear infection in one ear that was cured by transferring bacteria from the uninfected ear. Who knew? I believe our aversion to things fecal is inborn; a survival mechanism that in days past protected us from parasites and disease.
