Tiller Dolly to move a tiller

I have a JD model 647 3-point tiller that is stored in my garage on concrete floors. I have a need to move the tiller around in the garage on occasion and due to confined spaces, cannot use the tractor to move it.

I'm looking for ideas on constructing some sort of dolly to move the tiller around the garage. The tines on the tiller extend beyond the side skid shoes on the tiller, making movement difficult and it could potentially damage the tines or the garage floor by rolling it around on the tines. Anyone have an idea on a dolly or does anyone have photos of a constructed dolly? Any assistance is appreciated...both by me and my back.

2x4's and descent quality casters worked for me. Just built a square out of the 2x4's and bolt the casters to the bottom of he 4 corners.

I have all of my attachments on dollies, each custom made for the particular attachment. It's pretty easy:

1. first, measure the width and depth of the implement.

2. cut two lengths 3" longer than the width and two more 3" longer than the depth. I use 2x6s.

3. glue the pieces up in a rectangle with waterproof glue.

4. drill two 3/8" holes at each corner, one near the outer corner and one near the inner one.

5. bolt each corner together with two 3/8" hex bolts and nuts with 3/8" cut washers on the outside of each of the 2x6s.

6. consider the weight of the attachment and dolly and screw mount appropriate casters (I use swivel casters on all four corners to make the dolly maneuverable from any side or end) to the depth timbers (the short ones running // to the tractor) so that they are on the bottom of the dolly and the attachment rests on the width (longer) 2x6s. With a tiller or boxblade the teeth or scarifyers can be positioned so that they don't rest on the timbers and the attachment is supported by the rear and sides.

This kind of dolly will easily hold attachments in the 400-600# range. It might even be sufficient for my Backhoe, but, to be safe, I am making the dolly for it out of 2x5" 1/4" thick tubular steel with 6" steel wheeled casters.

Here's the gantry-type dolly I built for my pre-owned Yanmar RS1200 rototiller (48" wide) that I use with my B7510HST.

Used 1.5" pipe fittings, which is probably overkill. 1.25" or 1" fittings would have been enough.

I used $3.50 metal swivel casters from Home Depot. Don't use plastic casters.

Total cost around $100, largely for the steel.

Sounds like this will hold substantial implements well. I initially tried the idea with the framed 2x4s, but with no success--it just rolled off the stand (right onto my already sore foot). Got any pics to help me get a better overall picture??? Thanks! /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

I built custom dollies for 6 of my attachments, including the Muratori tiller. Also bolted casters directly to bottom of the carry all and built a rolling truss mounted hoist & sling system to remove the PHD and dock it on the garage wall. My digital camera makes photos with more than the 100k max bytes that you can upload to TBN as attachments. If I can figure out how to reduce the # of pixels, I'll try to post a photo.

I'll try to take and post some over the weekend. They are really very simple to build; aside from glue drying time, it takes 1/2 to 3/4 hour to build one.

My dollies are much the same as ronjhall's, except I put plywood floors on mine. The attached shows four in use in my garage, loaded from left to right with an aerator, a dozer blade, a tiller and a snowblower. I also have one for my rotary broom. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Can you get an old pallet?

Just put 4 dollies on the bottom of the pallet. I used a pallet for the bottom to my carryall and put 4 dollies on the bottom of it to roll it around.

I put my BB on a furniture dolly sometimes, works pretty good.

Mine are basically the same except I use 2x6s and two hex bolts per corner rather than 4. I guess since you've got the idea I don't need to take or post any pics. Have fun makin' 'em.

Man hwp and all, you guys are making me look bad. My BB, scoop, and tiller are sitting behind the barn with a tarp covering them! But I think I've been inspired now, I'm going to buy some lumber and casters, and moving my stuff inside the barn /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Seriously, that's a great idea to protect your investment.

Not to worry, cwarrix. Mine were outdoors for about a year, while I build the barn! they don't seem much the worse for itl, although I'm glad to have everything out of the weather, now.

I use (2) furniture dollies. One on each side so the tines clear. I think I may have put a 2x4 or two on as well, but it's in the shed now and I cannot remember for sure. In any event, I was going to build one, but the furniture dollies are on sale at TSC frequently for $10-12.

Can't beat that! Moves easily as well.

Thanks for the pictures and information. These look kind of heavy. I have a dolly for my back hoe made of metal that I bought on line. I was hoping to find something like that.
