Dogs wondering off to die?

A sincere question...

Why do you let your dog outside roam unattended?

At the end of the day, none of us can control our dogs when they are outside left attendended (unless they are in an enclosed area such as a fence), which is why I ask.

We let our Weimaraner have free run. We're on 62 acres, house close to the center of the property. She doesn't ever go more than 100 yards or so from the house, unless we are walking with her. If she's out of sight, in one of the tree lines, one call of her name and she comes bounding back immediately. It's been our experience with this breed that females stay close to their humans, and this one is no different. It's also her job to keep an eye on the free ranging chickens, chase off predatory birds, let the deer know the garden belongs to her, and to bark when someone is coming down the driveway. She's an excellent watch dog. No problem not having a fence. She's mentally tethered to the house and the family. More reliable than a fence.

jk96, I feel for you and your own . . . I have a 14+ year old Ausie that you would swear is maybe 4-5 . . . your post scares me, I can imagine how you feel right now . . . I'm truly sorry.
Whatever took him down did it fast. He went from healthy and full of energy to gone in less than two weeks. I noticed he looked like he was loosing weight and took him to the vet to get checked out. All blood work came back great but started some antibiotics for loose stools and an appetite stimulant. 1 week later he was so weak we had made the decision to put him down before he saved us the heartache.

At my dogs age he does not listen to me at all, actually never really has except when moving the cattle, now he just leaves in the morning and comes back at different times.

More than a mile... neighbor said they found a dead dog up near front porch and I recognized it from someone I know a mile away...

I called and said how is Bing... husband said wife worried sick and been looking for him everywhere.

I said I think I have bad news and explained... said wife and and he would be right over...

It was very emotional all around and I felt bad but they said knowing meant the world... retired military family and Bing lived all over the world with them

Coyotes, out here where I live, are not a once in a while thing. They are here, around my outbuildings and on my property all the time.
The two I saw this morning must have been very hungry. Normally - they run like the wind when they see me. They were a beautiful matched pair. Hadn't started to drop their winter coats yet.

BTW - I have 80 acres also. The property line barbed wire fence means nothing to the coyotes.

I’m in the city and Coyotes have free range and daily sight...

I believe someone must be feeding them plus plenty of wild Turkey...

Dogs were always outdoor and never a problem in 50 years...

2 weeks short of 18 years our red Lab girl went outside and laid down in some nice green grass and was dead when I went looking for her...I think they know it's time.

So sorry about your loss. I understand it from the pack perspective, but I also understand it from wanting to do the best for your animals. Thanks for posting the wonderful photos.

I have watched coyotes climb 6' high chain link fence numerous times. Not a barrier. An electric fence...maybe. They catch a tail on our electric fence every so often and complain vociferously. We had a pair den just beyond the house fence last year, and we now have a new pair (one of the pups, plus another) hunting on the property. They follow my wife and our German shepherd down the driveway every morning, I assume looking for flushed rodents. She told our dog to sit/stay (in german), and the coyote promptly sat.

We do keep our dog away from the coyotes, just in case. They are tenacious hunters of our ground squirrels, for which I am grateful. Our neighbor, who has no cats and shoots at the coyotes also kills 3-4 rattlesnakes a month. I have killed five rattlesnakes in fourteen years, and two of them were ones that the cat had already caught, but not killed. She liked to play with them. I will take the coyotes at a distance.

Our dog is getting up there and I am dreading the time. She is totally focused on the family, and our calves, and is great about watching out for all of us.

All the best,

Peter

Thanks for the post Dan. That is the plan. If I do find him in the future I'll take the loader out and bury him where he's at.
You are welcome. Very sorry for your loss. Taking a beating would be easier would be easier to handle.... :(

Later,
Dan

That's a smart plan. Coyotes are very clever. If they want to kill a dog they will use one member of their pack to entice your dog away from your home. Then the whole pack will attack your dog. Doesn't matter how big your dog is. No dog can survive an attack by a whole pack of Coyotes. Lately I've been locking my 115 lb. 9 year old Lab in the garage at night to protect him from the Coyotes who have become more aggressive lately. 🐕
