Well, I went for a nice walk yesterday with my dogs. Picked up the mail then went through the ditch and onto my trails winding through the woods. Nice smell of fall in the air, a gentle breeze rustling the leaves.
Just a beautiful day, so decided to loop around and sit for a bit on the bench in the clearing. Dogs layed in the grass, behaving so nice. Gosh it was great.
Decided I best get going so started back home. The Shepard/Lab female running ahead loose, being such a good dog. The big Akita male on a twenty foot rope leash out ahead, not pulling or jerking such a good dog.
Then, the Akita dives seven feet into the woods. I hear wild animal sounds and call the dog out. He comes out with a skunk in his mouth, it looked dead so I tell him to drop it and come. When he drops the skunk it is still alive and it runs back for the woods.
So much for the smell of fall. Four washs, soaking in vinegar, and a full body clip for the Akita and not to much odor left this morning. Just enough to give me a headache.
On the upside the Shep/lab has finally gotten smart enough to stay away from skunks. When I called her to follow home, she made a big loop through the woods on the opposite side of the trail as the skunk, on her way to join us.
