Our old neighbor lost his pooch a couple months back to old age. Waited about a month and adopted a 8 month old pooch.

Pooch was from a breeder, and no one wanted it. So it spent it's whole life to this point locked in a cage.

This pooch is so skiddish of everything. Gets pretty overwhelmed when he goes outside.

It's gonna take quite a bit of time and patience for the pup to come around
My border collie was like that. She was born into a dog hoarder situation, sheriff raid to take the dogs..... she was adopted out numerous times and returned each time due to being terrified of the world.

She eventually ended up in the shelter, they sent her to a rescue lady since they could not work with her. Rescue lady tried for 9 months to settle her down and even she gave up. Then she came to live with us. On day two of having her my wife asked if I had expected this much of a handful. My comment was "no, but she's my dog now".

That was 4 years ago. She's a good dog now, but it took the patience of Job and a kind hand.

All dogs are GOOD it's some of the people that own them that are not. My little buddy I lost last year, he was a rescue. He never left my side when I was recovering from back and neck surgeries unless I needed my wife for something then he would go get her attention.

Hard to like this, but I've heard similar stories. In the Hollywood Cemetery in downtown Richmond Va is a cast iron dog a child would pet when she walked by it (Rees family). She died as a child and dog placed at her grave. It couldn't be melted down for Civil War bullets since it was in a Cemetery.

Thats what we figure will happen with our old neighbors Yorkiepoo.

It's extremely chill inside the house which is perfect since he's almost 80. Dog will play with it's toys when it's just the two of them in the house.

When he takes the dog outside, it follows along about a foot behind him. The dog will do a little exploring on occasion, but doesn't stray more then 10ft from him.

It's scared of everything. But thats normal with an animal that spent it's whole life so far locked in a cage inside a small room.

After visiting for a couple hours, where my wife and I made no sudden moves he started to approach us and give us some sniffs. But if we acknowledged him or looked at him, he would scoot back out of range.

Dog has it's tail perpetually tucked between his legs when he is outside.

Old neighbors sister will be visiting for a month starting in a couple weeks. She has a Yorkie that's friendly with other dogs. So hopefully the other dog will bring it out of it's shell some.
