Thanks. Wife's actually recovering from surgery. Nurse Gypsy has been taking her duties pretty seriously :D

Dogs know more than we think they know.

Lived in NC continuously for almost 18 years now, longest I've ever lived in any state anywhere (dad was career military, I enlisted, went to college afterwards, moved around a bunch when I was yound and single up until I got married in 2003 in NC).

Came across this picture looking for something else, and made me realize the above comment.

4 of the dogs in the pic were ours, the german short hair pointer mix by the chair (white with black spots), we found a home for when we worked with the humane society. 3 dogs in the pic died from old age, the other went out at around 8 years of age due to a suspected heart attack of some sort. Every dog in the pic was a rescue. Hope the german short hair pointer mix is still around...

I hope when I die, perhaps I'll get to see them and some others again.

The irony is as of right now, we still have 5 dogs in the house, 2 of which we are dog sitting for an extended period of time (for my in laws who we adopted the dogs out to them in the first place LOL).

image.jpegimage.jpegI have posted a few pics in this thread in the past. One or two of our "rescued" wimariner who we have had for a couple years now. This dog is incredibly smart..like scary smart. He knows .like.. 10-15 minutes before someone is coming to the door, knows if someone in. The house is not feeling well and will not leave their side. Knows how to turn door knobs to open a door. ..knows that when we are getting dressed in. The morning that it's likely he is on his own for the day..and pouts on the bed as we are getting ready. .. knows when it's 5:30 pm ( dinner time) because like clockwork he is circling his bowl.. and he is obsessed with the TV, iPad or cell phone..he will literally watch them intently and nudge the iPad with his nose if it shuts off while he is watching.

The only livestock the dogs are allowed to harass are the bulls (presently 4). They are separated while the cows calve and this one seems to be ... excited... to be harassed.

The reason the dogs are allowed to harass bulls is the bulls do not run, they could not care less. But the biggest reason is they can (and have) distract the bull when I need to get out of the pasture. There are times when you need to be in the pasture at the same time and the bull can run faster than me.

Some updated pics of the puppy "Max", he's 6 mos old now. I DO know what he's thinking: it is "are you going to eat all of that.... I 'm waiting for my share..."

A picture of the new puppy I will be getting - Friday, May 3rd. He is a brown Cocker Spaniel. Exactly 8 weeks old on the 3rd. The great granddaughters think we will call him - Brownie. I asked for their help in selecting his name. Now I'm in hot water - the girls want their own dog.

Brownie is a good name. My wife names my dogs, she does better than I do. Otherwise they get called stinky or dozer or some lame name.

What is the matter with those names? The pair of cats inherited from my FIL are Stinky and Grey.

I can see it all now! Standing out in the yard yelling at the top of your voice "Here Stinky! Here Stinky!"... I always think about that now when anyone...especially us...names a dog!

We had a cat named "Screwy". He had an ear issue and always had his head cocked to the side.

We had english setter that responded to the name Stupid (it applied to this dog). One day my wife called and I said "dropping Stupid at the kennel". I was not suppose to use that name in front of the kennel staff.

Our current jack russel mix loves to the snuggle with Mom. But gets called the Little As***le by the guys in the house.

The gal that has "Brownie" sent me pics and I picked him from the pictures. One thing for certain. Brownie will be getting a hair cut mighty soon. Otherwise, it would be like dragging an industrial dust mop out thru the brush and pine trees. One of my previous dogs was a black Cocker. I spent untold hours picking Cockle burrs, brushing, combing until I learned. Out here is the "pucker weeds" - only short hair will do.

Friend in Alaska had a Lab. Called it Too-We. That Lab was one honest-to-God gas bag. Rode everywhere in the bed of friends pickup.

In a time long gone, my father's Uncle had a farm and he had dogs. His black dog that he had while my father was an early teenager and worked the farm was named something that sounded a lot like rigger... They sold milk to a dairy who used a driver that was a black man, and the driver.... According to my father... Was entertained by the dog and it's name.

I don't think that would fly today. My father's Uncle died in the 70's at over 80 years old, and this would have been in the late 50's timeframe.

I never have to call that loudly for mine... usually I'm more worried about tripping over him. Right now though I'm on the second floor at work, and he's lying outside in the sunshine, tied to a fence post.
